Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

1 Year Old Cat with Fleas - need advice

    Hi All

We have a 1 year old cat named Kali - she is delightful, but recently she seems to have picked up Fleas recently -

We bought a spray to kill the fleas, and applied it, - and we were advised to get a 'spot deterrent', which we were told is applied to the cats back, between her 'shoulder blades' where she cannot lick it off. We were warned not to apply this spot, until all of the fleas were dead using the spray. The spot will then behave like a detterant or vaccination, and prevent re-infection - we bought both the spray and the spot deterrent, and planned to do this correctly

Alas, having used the spray 5 times, and in the correct way - we are not having any luck with this. The cat still seems to have a large number of fleas, and we are getting quite worried. We have made inquiries with several pet stores, along with other fellow cat owners, and we have been told that another 'spot' treatment, which will KILL the fleas, and provide a few weeks of protection - then we can use the first lot of deterrents which we bought.

To be honest, im below amateur on this. We love our cat, and she in turn HATES that spray - and as it doesnt seem to be working, we want to try something else.

Appreciate any and all advise - we would like to avoid a costly vet visit, and everyone we have spoken to has told us it will be unnecessary -

Sic semper tyrannis - thus always to Tyrants

    Hi OP,

Can you let us know the brand names of each of the products you've been using?

We have 5 cats and a dog. Fleas were an issue about 10 years ago and we found the best stuff to use is the Advantage stuff. You pay an arm and a leg with the vets, so I sourced it online from the UK.

It works by killing the fleas that bite the animal. It's effective for around 4-6 months. So, when dormant eggs hatch on your carpets, rugs and bed sheets (disgusting, I know) and then jump onto your cat and bite….they die before producing more eggs. It takes a few weeks and a couple of cycles before the infestation is gone, but let your cat roam around attracting the fleas to bite and die.

A tip I learned if the fleas are biting you as you sleep. Pour tap water into a large plate/dish and drop some washing liquid into it to break the surface tension. Place under your bed and you'll find dead fleas in it the next morning. It was still an issue for us even though we have wooden and tiles floor throughout the house. Flea Free more than a decade now and we dose the animals every 6 months with the treatment. I order about 2 years supply at a time.

Get a prescription for Frontline from a Vet, you put it on the back of their neck. It lasts three months, you just put it on straight away, no need to wait until fleas are gone, it kills fleas and worms, it's expensive alright, 40 plus euro per treatment but it's the business. No fleas or itching and worm free. That's very important too if the cat spends time indoors.

Frontline is also available from the website I linked and without a prescription, so without a vet visit and for less.

Unfortunately you have to use something like addresspal, but ordering enough for a couple years gives you free UK delivery and you just have to cover the addresspal stuff.
