14C and unbroken sunshine is not something I can recall happening in January here before. That's milder than our average April day too so definitely spring-like!

And a very noticeable stretch in the day this evening.

This last picture was 17.01 .

That was a stunning sunrise and a stunning day

Actual heat in the sun and I was out soaking it up on tea and lunch breaks

Down to 2°c at Dublin airport now! After a max of 14°c earlier.

They got 3°c higher than the forecast maximum from MÉ and they're currently 2°c below the forecast minimum from MÉ.

The location of the weather station within the campus has a lot to do with that

Casement 10c and Dublin AP 0c at the moment (at 2230).. Some contrast!

And you usually have that cold sea breeze in April.

A few lovely days. The contrast with last week!

If it is not going to be snowing I will take this weather instead. Sublime few days in Dublin. Beautiful still fresh and bright. Life affirming

The past 2 days of sunshine have been lovely and great for walking. Rarely is mild weather in the winter enjoyable but these are those rare times it is.

Southerly winds giving some cracking lenticular and lee wave clouds in the sky this morning coming off of the Wicklow Mountains.

Is that from the little jetty where people swim? Mine is from Alfie Byrne. It's great having that view on your doorstep!

It's starting to feel like January is becoming our most reliable month for sunshine 😂

January 2022 to 2024 were all notably sunny. This one is pacing similarly but it's way too early to know how it'll finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,924 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

    Indeed it is.

Dublin Apt had 7.4 hrs of sun yesterday. An equal record for the first half of January (1st-15th) with 14th January 2001. Probably about the maximum possible. The overall January record is held by 30th January 2024 which had 8.2 hrs.

Combined with a max of 14.1C, superb but weird for January.

The station has been move two or three times in recent decades I think.

Now it's in the middle of a field two or three KMs away from the terminals so isn't affected by any major heat island affect. But it does seem to be a small frost hollow as until last year the station would often record very low overnight temps on clear, calm night. Strangely this seems to have largely stoped since the new runway opened.

But yesterday's max of 14º has nothing to do with the location of the station IMO. MET E just got it wrong for yesterday.

Can't believe it's January. Was just out running in a t shirt and shorts, Liffey is like glass. A week and a bit ago it was a different story!

Here we are around 15-17 January wishing 10-12 days of late January away, waiting for a Beast From The East.

I first noticed myself doing this in 2002!! I suppose it shortens the winter😅

2009 was the only time since 2002 it happened. Ok 2018, but for me that spell was too late. No ice days, constant dripping of melt, sublimation, sun as strong as early October. Once you get to within a month of the equinox, 21 February, the core of winter is over for me. A bit like after 21 August you can get temps up to 28/29c but it's only getting bright at 6.30am and dark at 8.40pm.

That's what made 2010 so special. Also 1982. Again the BFTE 1987 and Cork -6C at midday. Seeing the best synoptics evolve at the best time of year is amazing. It's like watching Usain Bolt in his prime. 2018 BFTE was a bit like watching Bolt sprint at 44, very impressive, but not the real deal!

    Hello

Will we be due any more cold spells?

Tan online article saying a second beast from the east but a pest from the west. I don't know how true that is and what it will bring. Any rough guide or forecast for next week please?

What a beautiful day, just about hanging on to brightness at 16.50

Ahh the January daffodils, not long untill the midges, and the long evenings, before winter starts in June. What a totally banjaxed climate we now have.

Currently very little in the way of cold in the models for us other than the odd extreme rogue member going astray. There is nothing in the models to indicate that we are going to get a decent cold spell in the short term with mild and Atlantic dominated very strongly hinted at in the models between now and end of January. The GFS was trying to build a Scandi high a few days ago but that idea has now well and truly been put to bed.

The NAO and AO are now positive and set to remain that way into the beginning of February so northern blocking producing a cold spell for us seems extremely unlikely any time soon.

Looking at the temperatures in the US and Orlando is 14c the last I checked, nearly the same temperature as us.

Locally it has been the driest January I can remember for ages. Finner just 17mm for this month and Malin 26mm. Around 35mm for me. Some drizzle expected over the coming days but that won’t amount to much.

Beautiful sunrise this morning in Galway. It's has been a lovely week of weather since the cold snap. I always expect wet and windy weather when those cold snaps end but not this time.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Yet another stunning start to the day in Dublin. Fantastic stroll in Balbriggan greeted with a kaleidoscope of colours at dawn.
