Looking very windy along Atlantic coastal counties especially early Sunday morning and continuing very windy into the afternoon in the the NW, no doubt warnings on the way. Numerous wintry convective squally showers with hail and some isolated thunderstorms along the coasts possible. a rough spell of weather Saturday/ Sunday.

    Interesting from ME

Saturday night: Very windy on Saturday night with showers becoming widespread overnight. Some of showers could be heavy and wintry with a mix of rain, hail, sleet and possibly some snow, especially in parts of Ulster and on higher ground. The showers will be hit and miss but some temporary accumulations are possible where they do fall. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees with fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds veering northwest overnight.

Sunday: Very windy to begin on Sunday. Blustery showers will be fairly widespread early on, some of them heavy and wintry with a mix of rain, hail, sleet and possibly some snow. The showers will be hit and miss but some temporary accumulations are possible where they do fall. Showers will become confined to the west and north in the afternoon and the risk of any sleet and snow will diminish. Afternoon highs 5 to 8 degrees. Fresh to strong and gusty northwesterly winds, will reach gale or strong gale along western and northern coasts.

    Tonight

Saturday night will still be windy with showers becoming widespread overnight, some heavy and wintry with a mix of rain, hail, sleet and snow, the snow mainly on hills and in the north of the country.

Castlederg recorded a higher gust now 89km/h than during storm darragh.

Windy, all of a sudden, in Greystones. Gusting 48 knots now.

    Edit: Gusting 53 knots now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,654 ✭✭✭pureza

    gusting 80kmh here in Arklow

I see it was gusting 95 on this day last year

It’s days like this that can rattle power lines that just about stayed on during Darragh

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,746 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Gust of 69 knots/128 kmh just now in Greystones. 😮 Verging on Red territory!

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,746 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Gusts are crazy in Greystones! Bits of my neighbours temporary roof covering blowing away now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,115 ✭✭✭adocholiday

Power has dropped twice in the past 30 mins here in Rathdrum but seems to have stayed on. Some places around here were out of power for a few days after Darragh so I hope it doesn't go again.

I was surprised Wicklow wasn't added to the warnings looking at the charts during the week, the hi res models were showing 100+kph gusts for a lot of the county not just the mountains and even Met Eireann's own ensemble charts were showing possibilities of orange level gusts for the mountains and coast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,654 ✭✭✭pureza

gusting 90 kph regularly here in Arklow atm

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,746 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Christmas Market marquee in Greystones, that survived Darragh, now buckled!

    Gusting 55 knots atm.

As bad if not worse than Darragh here, usually the Window mountains shelter us from westerlies. Was not expecting it to. be this bad, horrendous conditions for my long run day, didn't enjoy it much!

In Greystones also and definitely seems stronger than the recent Red warning. A lot more damage in our estate this morning compared to last time.

Very windy north Wicklow. Definitely seems stronger than Darragh. Nearly got blown over this morning. Dry and sunny though, so that makes it bearable.

Frequent heavy blustery showers all day. Changed to hail showers this past hour. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some lightning later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,843 ✭✭✭beggars_bush

Gone baltic cold out there this evening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 479 ✭✭BagofWeed

Soaked again tonight during a jog. Never had a chest infection as bad as I had since the last soaking during the week. Thankfully it didn't spread to the rest of my body. But by God I've had enough of Cork. Lol.

The snow level should be coming down a lot over night with sub -6c 850 hpa temperatures widely across the country.

A few surprises for some by day break I reckon particularly for East Ulster and North East Leinster and the usual places in the North Midlands and of course higher ground.

Very windy here on the Kerry coast especially during a squally shower a short time ago and feeling bitter too, showers getting a bit more hail in them here as well. Loads of showers overnight, will be interesting to see how much snow falls, will make for some good hill and mountain shots tomorrow morning.

Roll on the longer days 🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,974 ✭✭✭acequion

I wouldn't presume to argue with your expertise on all things weather, Meteorite78, but I would consider both the wind and chill factor today just normal winter weather. Yesterday and today have been more like what you'd expect in winter and personally, I hate spring like weather in deep winter.

Today is the shortest day of the year and many are already heralding the "stretch" 😊 Being a winter enthusiast I absolutely love the darkness of this time of year. Love Christmas and the lights, couldn't imagine Christmas any other way. Love the cold too which is why I've liked these past few days. Seasons are all over the shop in Ireland but the ones I like best here are winter and autumn. I normally adore the high temps and sunshine of summer, but we don't get enough of that here in Ireland, so in this country I'll stick to being a defender of the darker days.☺️

A stormy night on the west coast with Mace Head reporting a Gust of 61 knots (113 km/h) at 9pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,387 ✭✭✭pauldry

Up to 136mm of rain for December here in Sligo contrary to lower totals over most of the rest of the country.

Fierce winds tonight and weather station picking up higher speeds than Darragh dunno why as nowhere near as windy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

    Finner gust 109km/h.

I just love the really cold day or the really hot day. The in between is meh. But we get 363 days of them. 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,387 ✭✭✭pauldry

Ya my weather station tends to go half of actual gusts due to cheapo type of wind measurement and it's picked 46kph gust so likely 92kph gusts here maybe 110kph at Sligo Airport

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,366 ✭✭✭mcburns07

Very squally showers in Cork all evening, proper winters night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Most recent shower had flakes mixed in

    11pm Mace head gust 120km/h

    Finner 106km/h

Wild night on the Kerry coast with very heavy squally showers.

Lost power during the night in Athenry, and it just went for 5 minutes again. Nasty squally showers rolling in from the Atlantic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,753 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Bit of sneachta in D24 just now. No schtick.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,746 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Sleet/wet snow shower in Greystones now.

Snow on the hills this morning inland.

Light covering of Sneachta in Tara, Meath.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,594 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

Rain and sleet overnight with some lightning and gusty winds thrown in for good measure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,654 ✭✭✭pureza

nice bit of snow on the mountains here in south Wicklow today, very windy again

Suns out, solar batteries are full, house demand satisfied and we are selling a little bit of power to the grid as I type, not bad for bleak mid winter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭OldRio

Well we seem to have had a reduction in power from the Grid. Lights are dim and not enough power to boil a kettle or run a cooker.
