Microgeneration Rates

Got notification from Electric Ireland that they will cut their microgen rate from today from 21c to 19.5c per kWh.

I understood Electric Irl to be one of the better rates when I got my installation in June 2023. Find it really difficult to find out what the various suppliers pay for microgeneration. I there a simple supplier comparison listed anywhere?

…. Or what are other folks getting from other suppliers?

Somewhat unrelated: Does this mean it voids our contract with Electric Ireland by them doing this? (I just got the email as well.)

I rang Electic Ireland and their call center staff was unaware this email went out and they are being inundated with calls so I had to forward them the email they had sent me. (sigh.)

That's a significant difference now, I would expect most suppliers to start reducing their rates to follow EI.

Got the email too, just over a 7% reduction, and not the last I would guess.

The email says: "customers…annual microgeneration credits ranging from €50 to €300." But that would now be reduced to approx. €45 - €280

The reduction in microgen rates went down at the same time as the import rates.

(Announced 6? Weeks ago I think)

Doesn't amount to breach in contract or anything like that though.

I'm with Flogas. Their FIT rate of 20c incl. VAT would need to reduce significantly to justify a battery.

Thankfully as seen with EI the import rates are going down as well ergo you may end up in a similar place financially as you are in now.

For comparison of tariffs, go to www.energypal.ie - click on the Smart Plans Tab, scroll over/zoom out to FIT column.

Its generally up to date, but hasn't updated with the new EI feed in tariff yet.

I see the vat exemption for all suppliers is only until end of 2025. It may be extended again. The vat exemption seems to be limited to 400 euro annual payment too.

Likely to be extended, and its up to 800, per person next year too.

Vat thing is complicated, as it only really effects the first person in the chain that is not VAT registered.

if playing by normal VAT rules, and both businesses are VAT registered.

Business A buys €1000 + vat of electric services( everything use, standing charge etc) which comes to €1090.
Electric supplier then pays that 90 to revenue (keeping it very stripped down, only the balance of vat on sales and purchases is paid/claimed back)
Business A then claims back that 90, so it goes Business A, Electic supplier, Revenue, Business A.
And it will be the case in the reverse for FIT.

A non registered person or business cant charge VAT, and the supplier cant claim it back… Its likely, its not worth the hassle!

Just got the energia email there too. That's a significant drop, but the main reason for choosing them was the 4 hour window rather than 3 with pinergy. I might re-visit pinergy come renewal next year though.

Energia really need to drop their peak rate, but no mention of this.

EV Plan is just a name. Off peak is the 4 hours on cheap rate. Peak rate is the rest of the time. Peak simply represents the highest rat of any tariff and Energias peak lasts for 20 hours. But I know what you mean.

They all do, it just depends what tariff you sign up to.

Why do you think it's "money racket madness"? Surely it's just a case of attempting to suppress demand at a time when infrastructure is under pressure, and energy is at its most expensive? Seems logical to me.

I'm on EV plan. Two rates. Day and EV rate. No peak 5-7pm rate.

Re. Peak rates, it's profiteering at its finest. If it wasn't we should be seeing very cheap dynamic rates at the lowest demand point of the night.

No, you misunderstand. All energy providers have tariffs that have peak rates, not all tariffs have peak rates.

Dynamic tariffs are coming, must be in place by September 25 iirc.

Yes, most are cynical about it, but the generous export rates caught us all by surprise. Fingers crossed for fair rates, I'm setup and ready to go when it arrives.

Is this not inevitable as prices decrease, would it not increase again if prices to import increased? Had just switched to energia a week ago when they announced cut but it wasn't sole reason i switched.

This is something which I find difficult to gauge, generally as more houses install solar then the FIT should drop as there's more supply

However, it's also probably true that every kWh the suppliers buy from solar is resold at a profit to someone else

On the other hand, FIT rates are still generally higher than market rates. The price at midday today was 16c/kWh, on June 21st it was 8c

My guess is that it's being used as a selling point for potential customers and suppliers are probably aware that customers with solar are more interested in rates and more likely to switch for a good deal

So each company probably has some margin between import and export rates that they're applying for now, but in the long term if more solar comes online then it'll likely result in lower FIT rates as a proportion of import
