Sewage smell from my bathroom.

    Hi All,

I have an awful sewage smell coming from my bathroom sporadically. It really doesn't seem to be after/at any particular time of the day/night or even after we use the bathroom. The house is not new (1990s house) but I am a new home owner so am unsure of the steps I could take to try and solve it. I am using bleach consistently to help (in the toilet, sink drain and shower).

I don't feel it is coming from the toilet I feel it is either the sink or shower but it takes over the whole house when it does smell.

The bathroom is attached to my bedroom (I am in a bungalow) I can't take off the cap on my wet room style shower it seems to be cemented down unfortunately, so all I have been doing is either using drain un-blocker or bleach.

Out of our two bathrooms we don't tend to use this one, only at night and we never shower in there as the wet room style shower just floods the whole bathroom.

Any and all advice is welcome as I am new to this type of experience.

    Thanks

Have you cleaned out the shower trap and checked it can run freely outside as well, you need to run water and flush toilets every so often regardless of wheather your using them or not. If the floor isn't draining quickly enough it would lead me to think the trap needs cleaning.

The fact that you aren't using the shower might be the problem.

If not used, the water in the trap can evaporate allowing gases to come up from the sewerage system. This is usually worse in windy weather.

Try pouring a jug of water down the drain every week. Do the same with the basin if you are not using it.

Yes, we get this in very stormy weather. I find running the shower and bath tap for a while fixes the problem. Also, leaving the plug in the bath and a cover over the shower drain keeps the draughts out during stormy weather!
