There is zero sign that City side can get back in that groove again. Rodri is the heartbeat of that team and they look lost without him. Honestly think they'll finish behind both us and Arsenal this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭The Rooster

City still had 23 shots against a Spurs side playing out of their skin, and had a number of clear cut chances. Haaland will not keep missing. Far too early to be writing them off.

Good win after a poor performance.

All about City next week, fvck the Madrid game in my view. Effectively nothing riding on that game in terms of the standing in the Champions League, rest the bodies and prepare for next week.

There is no way there will be 11 changes for the Real game midweek. Why can't we play our best 11 against them and not be ready for city on Sunday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,096 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

I think we can start to believe, if we beat City, and Arsenal fail to beat WH away next week . We also have the advantage of playing Arsenal at home, 3 games from end of season. And fact City are away to Arsenal, Spurs, Forest, Man U, in second half of season, banana skins, plus City end season away to Fulham, who are decent, 4pts off Arsenal currently. We end season at home, against Palace.

Beat City and we can afford to drop points, we don't need to be perfect , but we need to beat them.

I'd be quite happy with a draw against City.

We were fairly putrid for a lot of todays game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,647 ✭✭✭facehugger99

Given the current standings, a draw would be a fantastic result.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,467 ✭✭✭Widdensushi

Rubbish,a bit of luck on their side and they would have beaten spurs yesterday,, January transfer window is not far away either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,105 ✭✭✭Allinall

you all seem to be ignoring Chelsea.

In my opinion they are now the biggest threat to Liverpool winning the league.

No one is ignoring them, but they blow hot and cold too often, 4th for them I think.

Arsenal are in a better position given their experience of title run ins in particular.

Another struggle, another win,we could be the most unimpressive winners since Fergies last/2nd last title,at the moment it looks like no team ig going to be consistent enough to reel us in, avoiding defeat v MC is a must and let's be honest, they are ripe for picking,we would all have taken this at the beginning of August

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,467 ✭✭✭Widdensushi

Arsenal look class to me, could see them going on a good run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,967 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Well of course not, we haven't 22 first team players fit even if we wanted to, but in terms of where to concentrate our energy, Madrid is low IMHO.

No team can go 100% all out twice a week all season, pick the (important) battles, and Wednesday isn't one of them. Beat Madrid in April or May if necessary, but don't worry about in November, especially given the standings and structure of the competition so far this year.

Kelleher.... the guy has come on so much on the last year or so BTW.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,647 ✭✭✭facehugger99

Going to be fascinating next week.

City have to go for the win, we don’t.

Will we go compact and try to hit them on the break?

Martin Tyler came out of retirement to say "oh no!"

We're a different animal with MacAllister on the pitch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,096 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

The fact we're bringing back, Jota, Elliott, Alisson, Trent, and Chiesa soon, only adds to our abilities. Tough week ahead, but both games at home, makes it easier, you'd not want to be traveling to Madrid and City over 5 days. No excuses about being tired when we play Wednesday night, and Sunday evening . Rotating some against Madrid is expected though.

I can't remember the last time i watched motd on the Saturday and again then on the Sunday night. What a lovely weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,463 ✭✭✭GiftofGab

I don't have high hopes for Chiesa anytime soon. I don't think he had a pre-season and he's been injured for quite some time. He can play in the cup games to give Salah a rest.

How long was Elliot injured for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,467 ✭✭✭Widdensushi

Elliot was on the bench today so is on the way back.

2 months. Always a great option off the bench.

That Dibling lad at Southampton is a player. Touch of the Gareth Bale’s about him.

Job done says it all . Hardly a brilliant performance but 3pts in the bag. What was the problem with the old thread , apart from trying to find it ?

Slot has explained several times that Chiesa is not injured. They have been working on his physical strength and conditioning so that when he is brought into the side he's physically ready. He could have gone away on both international breaks but the Italian national team staff agreed with the assessment of Liverpool. Having a fitter and stronger Chiesa available later in the season is a better option than getting sporadic performances from a partially fit player who is likely to suffer from niggling injuries. He began training with the first team group on Friday so he should be expected to start appearing in the match day squad soon.

Elliott returned to first team training last week having been out for 9 weeks. He suffered the fractured foot just over 10 weeks ago.

surely now we need to get business done with Salah and VVD..I think Trent is going, head has been turned by Real…watch himself and Bellingham be super pally this week..then focus on getting a new left back, Robbo is all over the place lately..

Depends what he’s looking for I suppose. I would be very surprised if the club wouldn’t offer a 1 year extension - if he wants a longer term deal then I can understand their hesitation. He’s still performing at an unbelievable level but he is getting on and is on huge wages so the club must be thinking about the future too.

I’m just trying to focus on enjoying watching him while he’s still here. A total club legend.

he's only 32, deserves a 2/3 year deal. He's an incredible athlete..obviously keeps himself in incredible shape..he will still get you 15 goals a season..and his goal involvement is incredible..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,390 ✭✭✭Talisman

He didn't receive a formal offer of a new contract in 2022 until everything was agreed. Games are being played in the media, just like his headline grabbing statement after the Man Utd game, "Nobody from the club has spoken to me."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,066 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Ah yeah I know that,I should of probably worded my post better, definitely games being played. Salah rarely speaks to the English media so he is definitely cranking the pressure up on the club, which he is entitled to do

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,121 ✭✭✭✭GBX

I'm hoping Salah is saying no offer as what has been offered hasn't been where he'd want the offer to be. Was Werner at the game? Could have swore I saw him on TV. As my first thought was perhaps he's there to finalise deals for Salah/VVD/Trent ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,109 ✭✭✭✭klose

Not offering a deal to Salah is unforgivable for the club, ditto for VVD. No point in us doing well/challenging for honours this season and Mo/Virgil & Trent stroll out the door on free transfers next summer, would set us back years that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,057 ✭✭✭✭noodler

At this stage, of Mo turns to shite in 2 years time, we just hold our hands up and say we worked with the best info available at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 721 ✭✭✭FernandoTorres

It's all just part of the negotiation process. It's no coincidence he only talks about it after big performances. I've no doubt it'll get done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭Daemonic

Even a 3 year deal seems a no-brainer. Worst case scenario, his performances fall off a cliff in a season or 2, unless the Saudi experiment has ended, there would be no problem finding a taker for his services.

See Real won 3-0, did anyone watch them? Have they figured out their formation/structure with Mbappe?

Beating both Real and City in the one week would be quite a statement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭Tommysocks11

Yes a great performance yesterday again, we are having good luck this season which is great, mo is some legend, could have had 4, Darwin is brutal and surely will be sold for an upgrade, at least jota will be back soon, great to have Elliott back too, slob played well too I thought, please get contracts sorted as I think trent is gone and quiet honestly of the three I'd let him off as Bradley is a great replacement but salah and vvd need to be resigned, be great to beat real and city this week, even a draw v city would be acceptable. I love slot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,109 ✭✭✭✭klose

if you offered me a draw in both games now I’d take it. We can afford to rotate in the Madrid game as the 3 games after that are against “weaker” opposition, however rotating a team out against Madrid and getting beat will look bad enough so it’s an awkward situation for slot. I’d expect Tsimikas/diaz/mac to come in atleast on Wednesday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭CONSI

I think Slot likes Darwin, he runs all day and just keeps defenders busy. His runs drag players out of position, leaving space for others. I dont think he will ever be a 15/20 goals a season player but he has his attributes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,057 ✭✭✭✭noodler

    He was really poor yesterday.

Butchered a few attacks as well.

Robbo though, the pen, his bizarre positioning for goal 2 and then at 3-2 the way he left the man behind him to attack the ball...some of it was so braindead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,867 ✭✭✭kingshankly

but it’s only your opinion bookies have them at 16/1 fourth favourites

I only saw the first 30 minutes but it looked a very scrappy game, a lot of fouling from both sides and play acting from Madrid players, something that we need to look out for.

I had the impression that they didn't know their formation or didn't stick to it from what I saw. Madrid players almost running in to each other going for the same balls.

They were got at a few times with quick counters too.

I think Slot could approach the game similar to Chelsea. Let Madrid have the ball and hit them on counters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Darwin was unusually quiet. But I didn’t think he was bad. Slot was clearly more happy with him than Gakpo on the day. The 9 is the one most reliant on good service, and there was little of that. But he could have done more to get himself involved. He did super for the Diaz chance, hard to excuse Luis over-running it. Probably down to him being just on the pitch and misjudging the pace . It was the perfect ball by Darwin given the positioning of the defender and keeper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 298 ✭✭anplaya27

Great performance? We must have been watching a different game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,098 ✭✭✭steve_r

I've only watched them in the CL, but the impression I got of them was a lopsided team that didn't really know the best way to structure itself.

Vasquez at RB (if he plays) is definitely a weakness defensively but is a bit of a threat going forward, got a nice goal in the game against Dortmund.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 563 ✭✭✭CliffHangeroner

Had high hopes when Nunez signed but besides all the running he does i don't see him ever being good enough to be the 20 goals plus a season striker we badly need if Mo goes. Honestly think if he'd cost 20m to sign we'd have moved him on by now but we can't afford to take a massive hit on his transfer (75m was it) so we are persisting.
