we have been in the uk for the last 3 years. we (wife and i) are on parental leave from our jobs in the UK, which for me at least, will end at the end of dec 24. we have a car that we bought in the uk. we are looking to apply for relief from import charges (ive been trying to work my way thru this form: Transfer of residence from non eu country - application and dec for relief from import charges and VRT).

more info: our baby was born in dublin in sept 24. we drove our car over to ireland in august and we have not returned to the uk since. my paternity leave is coming to an end at the end dec 24 and i have handed in my notice to work explaining that we have decided to move home on having the baby etc.

my question is: the form requires reciept of the ferry ticket where the car was brought into ireland (for us this will show aug 24). will it be ok that on the form im filling out it will state that we are moving back to ireland in dec 24 but the car actually arrived in ireland in august 24? really appreciate anyones help on this! many thanks :)

only the period up to Aug 2024 will be considered when assessing whether you are entitled to VRT relief. Hopefully you bought the car prior to Feb 2024.

it’s not unusual for a car to be in Ireland before the change of residence, in my case one of them was in Ireland almost a week per month in the year prior to my ultimate return. These have to be disclosed. The August 2024 ferry ticket (email) would be useful.

You can include a cover note to say that you had returned temporarily and have chosen to stay - your resignation and P45 would support this as should the sale of any U.K. property or termination of any U.K. rental agreement. If you did this in August the. You should think what approach is best to take as if you had no accommodation in the Uk, it would be hard, in the circumstances you outline, to assert that you had not ceased your foreign residence then.

The VRT should be nil and thus any penalty or late charge should be nil. Customs and VAT paperwork was not required in the past. There are similar reliefs but it might be more complex to do those late. It may be that you don’t need to do them but if you do, you might have to pay an agent as some find that paperwork more complex than VRT TOR.

thanks so much for this info. i think we will go the route of getting an agent to do the paperwork. we bought the car in February 2024. you have me a bit worried now but thanks so much. dont suppose you could recommend an agent?

if you bought the car in February 2024 and it has been here since August 2024 then there is no basis to make a VRT TOR claim. You would have to accumulate a further 2 months ownership and use in the U.K. I infer that you don’t have accommodation nor active employment there (ie you are on parental leave), on that basis I doubt you would have the proofs required by the claim form.
