Bettystown!

The overrated places in Ireland thread got me thinking about this place. Has anyone been there lately? Because if you haven't, stay away. I remember as a kid, with Mosney nearby, it was like Disneyland. Arcade, mobile homes around with tourists, beach, the place was actually deemed a holiday destination, it was buzzing during the summer, and decent all year around. The whole reason Mosney/Butlins was there in the first place, was because of how much of a holiday destination Bettystown was, and to cash in on that!

We seen how old domestic holiday destinations in Ireland and UK have regressed, and are seen as run down, but this place takes the p!ss completely. As someone living in Meath, about 20 minutes from there, I bring my daughter to the beach there a good bit every summer, and in such a short space of time visiting the place, I'm amazed by how much it's noticeably got worse since the last visit.

The village centre, once a scenic quaint town, with a hotel my grandparents got married, is an absolute disgrace. And that's being kind. As it stands, from my last visit, the newsagents and chipper on beach front closed. No where to even buy a bottle of water on a sunny day, think I got one in the ice cream shop up the road in the end. Apparently the chipper open again. In front on those shops, nothing but fencing and scaffolding, for an eyesore of a building being built behind them.

Accross the road, the casino, every window blacked out, the bookies and another shop accross from them, all blacked out windows. Head up and a Mr. Price, again, all panes of covered up windows on the main street with tacky advertising. It's like on a Sunday morning, the place is completely closed, even when shops are open. Theres nothing but blacked out windows in the town centre, and half it a building site too at the minute. Even Funtasia called it a day and got out of there. It's actually similar to Rathkeale, how closed down it seems now.

Like this place was a holiday destination not so long ago, up the road from Butlins/Mosney. Even with all the new houses and extra people, on a sunny summer day, the village centre is like a ghost town, with nothing in it. No buzz or excitment. As I said, it's gone so bad, it's not even recommended where anyone could even say its over rated. Surely I can't be the only one baffled by the graveyard of depression this place has become, once a thriving and buzzing holiday destination?

I was there about 3 years ago. Has a very weird vibe. Felt like a big disconnect/resentment between the traditional seaside village, the try-hard new estates, and the cheap-feeling apartments.

Got the sense there's lots of friction in the community, and it's really now a suburb of Drogheda.

The chipper and shop is being rebuilt after going on fire. Funtasia closed the bowling alley and it's more of a casino now.
