Sanitising of brushes in hairdresser

I was getting a blow dry a few days ago in a salon I've been going to for about a year and noticed that another hairdresser (the owner, actually) took the brush that the hairdresser doing my hair had just used to brush my wet hair and brushed her own hair, no sanitising etc.

Anyone notice if this is common as I've been getting my hair done in hairdressers for decades and it never even occurred to me that the brushes might not be sanitised between clients?

I remember when there was an ultraviolet cabinet in hairdressers that stored brushes between customers (don't know what it did exactly, but it looked the part!).

I haven't seen one in a long time, I don't see staff washing brushes either.

Maybe it's not such an issue with almost all customers opting for a wash before cutting? The old days of "dry cuts" might have been different.

I can't say it's something that I assumed they would do to be honest. I mean unless you're going around licking the combs or ingesting your hair afterwards how clean do they really need to be? Hairdressers won't tend the hair of people with lice and that's the only situation I can think of where you'd need that. Or where you'd have open sores on your head or something. I mean I don't expect them to be coming near me with manky tools but at the same time I wouldn't expect a full sanitation between clients either.

There's an issue in the UK in some barber shops where the machines aren't cleaned between customers. The fade styles can nick the skin, and as gossamerfabric mentioned, is leading to a spread of ringworm infections.

Maybe not applicable to hairdressing brushes, bit you never know
