Your friend should update their bank details on revenue.ie because any refunds can be processed via bank transfer rather than check.

Normally all refunds are processed with a return of money back to the tax payer in question.

You should have asked your friend to do their own investigation as they will just ask you more questions now :)

It's difficult to give any sort of answer to this as everyone's tax situation is unique to them. But I'll give some general points.

I'm going to assume your filed didn't randomly send receipts and details of his maintenance agreement to Revenue by email or post as that's not the way it works.

Taxpayers can file an end of year tax return either through their Revenue myaccount or if they are chargeable persons; through their ROS account. On the tax return your declare all your sources of income both PAYE and non PAYE. You also add any tax credits and reliefs you may be entitled to. The Revenue system looks at everything submitted and calculates what tax was due to be paid for the year based on the information in the return. If the information submitted says you've overpaid, then a refund of tax will issue form Revenue.

Taxpayers can also add some tax credits and reliefs to their active tax year tax credit certificate via their revenue myaccount. This will reduce the amount of tax they pay through the active tax year. It doesn't involve a lump sum refund from Revenue.

So it depends what your friend did exactly and what their circumstances are before they'll know the outcome of their submission. One thing is constant with both submission methods; taxpayers must acknowledge that they have read and understood the conditions of what they are claiming for. For example, that they have a legally enforceable maintenance agreement where the payments are not for the benefit of children.
