Yesterday was the day the National Veterinary Prescription System went live, after many delays and missed deadlines

As this is the first thread I can see on the subject, I think the farming community is receiving it with the same enthusiasm as the veterinary community.

Our first information webinar was on Thursday, four days before it went live.

Information on the system can be found at

I was surprised given the registrational requirements that we were set up to go having sent in some info so long ago I've forgotten how long.

I've managed to put in two prescriptions and just worked out how to do 'Client Associations'. This is linking a client to the practice so I can bring up their details for a prescription without having to put them in every time.

To facilitate this, farmers will be getting a text from any practices they use to allow the Dept to share their details.

This is despite practices having access to these details through the TB testing data.... GDPR, or so we're told.

    Answer with either a Y or N.

As details of how it should work should be available, and more accurate, from the link above, I'm not going to try to post them.

I'll just add any pertinent anecdotes here as I learn how to use the system and see how clients adapt to it.

Will one veterinary practice be able to see what prescriptions were administered to a farm by another practice?

I would imagine only if the farm in question has given data permission to both practices.
There is API access for vets and for dispensers of medication, obviously the dispenser must be able to see what was prescribed. I'm not sure you can have multiple prescribers but you could have multiple dispensers of medication.

We work with more than 1 vet. We have a preference for 1 practice over the other for certain unique needs, horses, SCC expertise etc. They're all exceptionally keen to price for vaccine (immediate payment) supply. I'm sure we have to give data access to each of the practices, but I'd be unhappy if 1 practice could see what the other was prescribing in that data should only be used for the purpose for which it is collected.

My understanding is you can only specify one practice for scripts but maybe that changed recently.

Actually I think it may be the case that they can search for any prescriptions from their own practice and look up any other prescription that a farmer presents a prescription ID for.

I got a text asking me to authorise "Advance Veterinary" to act as an agent on my behalf, is this the company that are running the service for the, DAFM

I would expect the text to have the name of the practice! would it be an alternative trading name/ parent company for your own vet?

    Was it from Veterinary Advances

Can't find Advance Veterinary on Google

is the system linked in with Vetscope or is this going to be an administrative nightmare for practices?

Pardon my ignorance on the subject is there any advantage for the client at all ?

Given this information is "electronically" stored…… could it downloaded pre Bord Bia inspection etc

    Just asking for a friend.

You'll still have to write up which animals and amount received the medicines and anti-parasetics

I don't think so, only there own prescriptions. AFAIK, we can dispense our own prescriptions but not those of a different practice.

I don't see how I can look up any scripts other than for my own practice, as yet.

Once prescribed the script is sent by email.

Each script has a unique identifier code for the entire script. It also has a code for each item. You can present just one identifier to a merchant so they only see that item.

A script for dispensed medicines only has one code.

Practice software can be used to send in the scripts to DAFM. It is keeping the companies busy at the moment.

Would it not just be a case of inputting the ID or line item ID the same as any other dispenser?

Probably, I'm not familiar with that.

Yes you will need to still record actually treating animals.

But if your vet doesn't already send you electronic scripts, DAFM will now anyway. No need to download anything just Setup your mail to filter them into a folder named 'For Inspections'

Anybody that was using 2 vets to cut down on paperwork for board Bia won’t be happy

Do we need to get a prescription for all ordinary dosing products now and if so will the vets be charging for prescriptions? I assume they will.

I think you can still buy them without at the moment but only until mid summer.
