    awful toerag this lad

Affidavits handed in rebutted as utter rubbish

Defence Forces member jailed for 8½ years for rape of fellow soldier at Dublin hotel

A member of the Irish Defence Forces who “spurned the consensual offer that was made to him in a selfish, arrogant and forceful way” has been jailed for 8½ years for the rape of a fellow soldier at a Dublin hotel three years ago.

Kielan Mooney (30) of Bloomfield Park, Derry, was convicted following a trial at the Central Criminal Court last December on a count of anal rape, oral rape and rape of the woman at the Dublin hotel on July 26th 2021.

Sounds like a heavy sentence, but it's a horrific crime so I'd have no sympathy for him.

For some reason the other case of the Defence Forces member (Crotty) who beat a women almost to death in Limerick, and boasted about it after. He didn't serve any jail time at all if I recall, which sparked protests.

You never know what you're gonna get with the Irish courts.

one crime was assault and one , rape. Crotty deserved jail time

8.5 years and likely out in 5 is not a harsh sentence here. He raped her more than once.

8.5 years for rape heavy? I’ve never been raped but I’d imagine I’d feel hard done by.

It’s about 20 years light!!! The sentencing guidelines need to reviewed, and false accusations also need to carry heavier sentences.

Should be zero tolerance around rape.

Crotty's sentence has been appealed by the DPP for a hearing on Thursday this week.

I imagine he will go to jail.

No, no it doesn't sound like a heavy sentence.

    At all.

Its long past time we began punishing violent crimes against the person with double and triple the sentences they are currently receiving, particularly sexual crimes against women and children by men who are getting away with mitigation for they themselves having taken drink or drugs or had a prior abusive relationship.

That should be a 12 to 15 year sentence, not 8.5. If be behaves immaculately while incarcerated, parole can be considered at 80% sentence served.

Convicted of three instances of rape.. 15 years more fitting here.. 30 if I had my way. Isn’t a life sentence possible for rape? Circumstances considered.

More Perjury in the courts that no one is gonna do anything about….

At a previous sentence hearing last December, a number of affidavits were presented to the court which described Mooney, a father of five, as “very family orientated”, “ a dedicated father” “someone who works exceptionally hard to make sure his children know they are loved” and also as a man who “idolises his children”.

On Monday, Gráinne O’Neill BL prosecuting told Justice Hunt, that following newspapers reports of that hearing, two women contacted the Director of Public Prosecutions to rebut that evidence.

The women, who each have two children with Mooney, said that Mooney has not seen his children, that he does not pay maintenance and that it is “always hard work” with him as he never really wants to see them.

One of the women said Mooney always put his social life and lifestyle ahead of her children with him. She said “He is not a good person, not a good role model” and she would never let Mooney near her children.

Mr Justice Hunt said it was clear from these statements from these two women that Mooney has had “no meaningful or positive contact with these children over a long period of time”.

He described those earlier testimonials in relation to Mooney being a good father as “a false prospectus” and a “gross overstatement” that his children will miss him if remanded in custody.

    Absolute Bullsh!t…

The brute animal deserved more, rape should carry a minimum sentence of 20 years

    • 8 and a half shouldn't be considered heavy for this offence , it should be the standard, if a little light even.
    • there are many min mandatory sentences what are ignored by our incredibly out of touch judiciary.

    Headline sentence of 9.5 years.

    What was the mitigation?

Also I would say with some confidence it is not the first time this absolute cretin has violated someone.

I don't see the connection between being a 'good father' and being found guilty of the raoe of a colleague.

These letters in support of these monsters needs to be stopped.

He's found guilty on a very serious charge so it should be assumed he's scum.

Do we know who gave the Affidavits? They should be named.

Without more prison spaces, sentencing isn’t that meaningful.

Just google prison overcrowding in Ireland, early release etc.

lots of people, like our own Labour Party, who complain about sentencing etc will always oppose new prisons or prison spaces.

They were (sworn?) affidavits that have been proven to be false. That is Perjury and it's a crime.

Usual rubbish, nothing will happen, Irish Justice system is a joke. It must be the most lenient justice system in the EU.

    rapist is 30 years old.

5 kids with three women already. just screams scumbag with no sense of responsibility

delighted the ex's shafted him by contacting the DPP

proper sentence would be between 12-15

probably due to the subjective nature of the details prevents it being seen as perjury. I mean, there’s no agreed definition on what is a “good father.” But yes, the affidavits look to be utter rubbish
