Correct size bag for Ryanair ready for a week away in the sun.

You sure that's a 20x25cm cross section there in the middle?

And careful a cm or two of handle doesn't sneakily flop outside the cage if you're caught for measuring!

Absolutely, what you're seeing there is a pocket where I've the passports, and a wallet. They come out into my trousers once u get to Airport for obvious reasons.

So, just boarded the plane here in Dublin, 3 people caught for bags I see, trying to board 3 small suitcases, tje hardcase type, with wheels, as hand luggage. It's actually ridiculous the argument I just listened to.

I just flew to the canaries with them last week. Didn't see any oversized bags but the small bags were not allowed in the overhead bins. Had to be under the seat

Just buy the correct sized bags and enjoy peace of mind. The squashy bags can be bought quite cheaply and last for years.

It makes sense to leave overhead for the bigger cases otherwise people are having to go up or down a few rows to find space and that causes delays boarding and disembarking.

I don't even want to put my free carry-on bag in overhead locker as I can take things from it during flight and is near at hand between my feet.

what really annoys me about all of this , the current cases with the wheels which still fit in the overhead bin, are a couple of cms quite literally too big for ryanair baggage cage at check-in, they will now be of no use potentially, and be discarded as rubbish by ppl ? And we will have millions of suitcases wasted ? Or am i over thinking it ?

i agree with others, ive seen ppl with icelandic sized tent bags getting on with additional backpacks etc over the years this is nuts. taking the p1ss completely.

Does ANYONE have the actual legal wording from Ryanair as to why this was changed ?

You should allow ppl some "gimme" room, but hammering ppl for a couple of cms shouldn't be an issue if a bag is already aircraft spec ?

    on their website:

    https://help.ryanair.com/hc/en-ie/categories/12489112419089-Bag-Rules

    • Priority & 2 Cabin Bags: This allows you to carry a small personal bag (40x20x25cm), which must fit under the seat in front of you and a 10kg bag (55x40x20cm) onboard, to be stored in the overhead locker. It also allows you to board the plane first using the Priority Boarding queue at the gate.

we booked 6 flights with two other carriers for this yr, i wasnt giving ryanair the money, matter of principle. didnt cost us too much extra at all, we were under as it happened, as ryanair fares between three different countries im going to have rocketed up sky high. so no thanks.

The problem with the "gimme room" is that people try to squeeze past the "gimme room". And then who decides what the "gimme room" is?. I flew out last week on Ryanair, saw 3 people getting caught for carry on, and not joking here, but it was absolutely ridiculous the size of the bags they were trying to bring, then they were arguing at the check in desk,. So now, imagine there was a setup where people could just decide for themselves what constitutes "gimme room", it would be an absolute mess. I remember a few years ago the back of a Ryanair plane where the staff sit and make food etc, was clogged up with bags that wouldn't fit into the overheads, it wasn't long after this that they got strict on it,.

Saw a lot of people getting caught both in Dublin Airport and back from Spanish Airport last weekend. None of them were taking the p and I felt the staff were being very harsh. Have the sizing cages changed; so where you used to drop your 10kg bag in from the top, you now have to slide it in? They aren't allowing for even a handle sticking out at the top.

A lot of people hard done by and I don't think it's consistent. I've had the same cabin bag for 20 years of Aer Lingus and Ryan Air travel, with no problems, but I don't think it'll fit in! Next trip to airport I'll secretly test it; didn't want to do it in the queue at the weekend!

I always travel light. When I went to NZ for couple of weeks I travelled light ie one backpack/small rucksack. And bringing my bag on board saves time both at departure and arrival airports where it's straight through instead of waiting at baggage carousel.

Plus airlines lose bags all the time or send them to other airports. Its happened to people in my travel party so I keep the bag where I can see it

I do agree people hauling around giant cases is ridiculous. In 2023 the woman in front of me got quizzed by US emigration in Dublin for solid 15 minutes about size of her bag for 2 week trip. I waltzed through after her with my backpack lol

Flying next weekend, so curious about this.
I have paid for a 10kg carry on. This is a hard shell and will fit in the sizer.
I will also bring a small backpack to go under the seat - just things I want for the flight. Headphone, kindle, etc
    I am presuming no issues.

Is the problem that people are taking the piss with their "1 small bag. Must fit under the seat on the plane (40cm x 20cm x 25cm)".

Or, they are not putting it under the seat but putting it in the overhead - meaning people who have paid for a 10kg carry on have no space left in the overhead bins?

I honestly think it's a matter of luck if you will get caught or not.

I flew with Ryanair over the weekend to France, 2 flights on the way there, 1 on the way back. I was travelling with a backpack that I know can fit under the seat, but it is bigger than the specs, so I would have paid if got caught, no point arguing with the staff that only do their job.

No checks in any of the 3 flights, I got away with it. On the way there on Saturday there was some kind of technical issue and many Ryanair flights were delayed, so checking luggage size was the least of their concerns, plus flights weren't fully booked. On the way back I even got lucky with seat allocation on an exit row and was able to put the backpack overhead.

I find Ryanair good for a 1-2 day trip where I can travel really light and take advantage of the low fairs. For longer trips were I would need a checked luggage, it is not as common that Ryanair is the cheapest option (though it still happens), so they are normal a last option for me.

Was in Italy 2 weeks ago, they were checking all non priority bags, didn't see any priority been checked

Flew over weekend just past to Spain. They checked all priority suitcases in the sizer. One didn’t fit in due to wheels being too long and were charged. No checks on non priority that I could see. All seems quite random.

Flew from the UK on Monday and they checked most bags in the sizers. I didn’t notice if people got charged. I only had a small bag and I was checked.

No luck involved if you bags are the right size.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,308 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

Your bag can be the right size and still fall foul of their boxes. Handles and wheels slightly outside the boxes means passengers can be charged for bags that are the right size.

Yep we saw some poor sod get nabbed by the Ryanair gougers on our flight to Lisbon. We were just relieved it wasn't my girlfriend again. Wait until they nab their first victim then board straight after the unlucky one.

But this is what you get when you fly with Ryanair. I travel regularly and would never fly with them unless there is no other option or my girlfriend books it. People think they are cheaper but not cheaper for all their victims!

Also my mother's friend got charged something like €64 for her handbag. Most have been a big handbag but I'd rather fly with an airline you can relax on. Thank God they don't do long haul.

I personally saw a fella getting checked who had a hard-shell wheelie case about half the permitted size (I never saw such a cute little thing!), had to stick it in the measurer and the wheels stuck out literally a couple of mm.

A big row ensued, we all got held up, but he paid up in the end.

Well, I'd rather not use them, to be honest. As I'm getting older I'd like the flexibility that other airlines offer, and travel with as much luggage as I want.

If the handles and wheels make the bag bigger than the permitted size then there is no skulduggery on Ryanair's part.

They have very transparent rules about all aspects of their business. Follow their rules and you'll have no issues.

I don't like their rules so I don't tend to fly with them. They are not always the cheapest option either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,308 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

The bag is not 'bigger' though, there can be millimetres of wheel or handle sticking out!

I agree they are not always cheaper, I'll go with them when they are a lot cheaper, if it's much the same, I'll always fly a different airline

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,654 ✭✭✭KaneToad

    I disagree.

The wheels & handle are all part of the bag. They occupy space. The Ryanair restrictions are a space issue.

If any part of the bag protrudes beyond the markings inside the Ryanair measuring cage, the bag is too big and liable for additional charge. I think this is fair enough.

If there were inconsistencies with the size of the measuring cage, or if it's dimensions were smaller than the size of bag it's purported to be measuring, then I think customers would have a legitimate gripe. I haven't heard anyone claim this though.
