Recommend a VPS hosting company?

Hi, I've been using a US based hosting company for the last 20+ years and never thought I'd move, but they sold out a few years back and have not been the same since, plus a price hike is in the offing this year, (and exchange rates tanking for the Euro) so looking at my options.

I'm looking for Unix/Linux (LAMP stack), VPS or managed dedicated, about 100 gig space (ex the OS), with MySQL running in the same box (had a bad experience with another VPS where the d/b connection was to a pool of d/b servers and connection kept dropping).

Looking for super reliability - have had less than 12 hrs total downtime in the 20+ years with the other company. And great support (email fine once responsive).

How do the Irish companies stack up?

    TIA :)

I see it's been a while since this thread was active, but I’m curious—has anyone tried any lesser-known VPS providers recently? Sometimes the big players get all the attention, but smaller companies can surprise you with great service and competitive pricing. Also, how do you usually test performance before committing? I'd love to hear more recent experiences or insights!

If you're looking for full control and dedicated resources, it might be better to rent a dedicated server instead of going with a VPS. A dedicated server can handle high traffic and resource-heavy applications without the limitations of shared environments. I've found that having a dedicated setup gives me more freedom to configure things the way I want, without worrying about noisy neighbors affecting performance.

I personally use hetzner for my VPS + Domain name needs and they have not given me any problems since I signed up with them many years ago.

Price wise they may be slightly more expensive than competitors in terms of servers, but I find the value they provide makes up for the slightly higher cost. Take a look at their server auction page (https://www.hetzner.com/sb/) to see if there is anything you'd like.

My only real gripe is they charge more than normal for domains, but all my servers and domains get centralized into one place that I just live with it.
