Fire arm cert

Hi I was wondering if I join my local gun club. Can I then apply for a fire arm cert. Also when do I buy and install the safe if granted.

Join the club, put a deposit on a gun, fill in the form, speak to the sergeant, they'll likely want to speak to you and inspect the safe, have it bolted to something solid ready for when they do visit.

You don't actually need to join a club, depending on your circumstances. There's no requirement either to have a safe for a single firearm.

I didn't install a safe until my 2nd firearm and have never had a visit.

However, ensure you have a good application completed and document everything to the nth degree. Eg. when I made my rifle application I documented installation of my safe, with photos of the wall before fitting, I photographed the screws, rawlplugs and washers as well as stating the diameter of the holes and specs of rawlplugs, screws and washers. I submitted the application, with supporting documenting in a report form with an index, and appended the documents requested in the FCA1. I've never had to wait for more that a fortnight for any license other than my pistol.

Establish a good rapport with your FO and keep lines of communications open.

If it means I get my licenses within a fortnight, or get amendments to my forearm license with a quick phone call or a WhatsApp message I'll sweep up the dust and bring it in to them!

Just a note on the safe, it depends on what firearm you're trying to license. If you're getting anything other than a non restricted shotgun, you have to have a safe. If you're getting a shotgun, it must be broken in two, stored separately and have a trigger lock fitted. Bear in mind, these are the legal minimum requirements but you're FO can insist on certain conditions, like a safe. Just for your own sake, get a safe.
