Hi, just wondering if anyone knows when the new BMD data will be available on irishgenealogy.ie? Eg births for 1924 etc?

It's a very variable date. No sign yet.

I made a chart for the dates each year, which you can see here.

Last year, we got them on 13th Feb.

That's the way to update a site, wish we could send them over to do the Census.

I'd prefer if the group id number etc was to the side rather than underneath the name but otherwise I like it

    PP,

I'm not sure all of what they quote as available in "Church Records" is actually available.

I found a 1940s death that I couldn’t find at the weekend, I’d tried extending the years in both directions in case both the headstone and memory card were wrong, just by surname, just by first name, tried every district ( not a common name) even checked in the UK in case they’d gone to the races. Found it straight off tonight right where you would expect it to be.

Just had a go this morning searching the civil marriage records for the name Pelly.

It returned just under 43,500 results where the old site would have returned just a few hundred for the same criteria.

The reason for this is that the new site is including forty thousand odd results for the surname Kelly.

I wonder what's changed to cause that to happen?

    Two other minor gripes…

I wish they had put Time Periods above Districts.

And I wonder why they've reduced the maximum display from 100 to 50?

Another thing that's changed is that, having done a search, I can't then click the Event Type, District, and Period filters with the mouse wheel to open them in a new tab.

Even right clicking them doesn't provide that option.

And when I click on a given district, only that district or All Districts appear on the reloaded page.

Just like the new census website these new features will take from the usability of the site and really hamper ones ability to interrogate the site.

It looks like they are using additional name indexes to search for name variants.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work very well. For example "O'Donnell", "ODonnell" and O Donnell" all return separate results, rather than the same set. Really frustrating to have to do 3 searches for one name. This doesn't happen with the rootsireland.ie name index.

If you want to search specifically "Pelly", there is an "Exact name matches only" checkbox under the name field.

Thanks Comsewogue but Pelly is a name I've been researching for years - it's a known quantity to me, if you like - so I went with that just to see if it throw up anything new. As stated above, it's throwing up rather a lot and unfortunately much of it is completely irrelevant.

I know some of the frustration I'm feeling in light of the up grades to both websites is simply down to me - that inherent resistance to change that we all experience from time to time - but I really feel that the new layouts are a retrograde step. And the fact that it appears to have been done without any apparent consultation with end users adds to that frustration.

Maybe it's time for a lobby group of some kind to be set up to engage with providers of genealogical resources so that the needs of researchers of all levels are not lost sight of when developing these resources.

I note the total number of results viewable is now back to 100 so that's something.

Yes and the deceased age at death is fixed.

Overall I like the update. One annoying thing I'm finding is that a page of Birth search resuls usn't showing the date or even year of birth for anything before the late 1890s. Marriages and Deaths hits always show the date, so it looks like an error.

Looks like the new BMD data is going live. birth 1924, marriages 1949 and death 1974.

    happy searching.

edit: the search works and returns results. but the image links look very odd (and don't work), they are probably still in process uploading everything - before announcing the new data.

Thanks @whosedaddy? It's exciting to see it's nearly ready, and I can do lookups while waiting for the image links to work.

    They're obviously in the process.

I also notice some of the old deaths (1864-1870) are now in the modern format with a group registration ID and precise date. Dare we hope?!

there is always hope and room for improvements. Haven’t noticed that with any of my old death yet unfortunately.

@pinkypinky fingers, toes and everything else crossed for access to the old deaths. I have a long list to look at :)

At this stage, I've paid for all significant deaths in my family in that period…

I need to check two possible 1949 marriages for a friends tree, having the date but not the image is an annoying slow introduction to having the data!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,731 ✭✭✭Claw Hammer

I notice some marriages in 1949 appearing twice, with the names of the couple reversed in the second appearance.
