Water softener backwash discharge to where?

Just got a new well and treatment all setup. One thing I didn't look into enough (and wasn't made aware of by installers) was the need for a drain for the backwash from the water softener. This is where I'm kind of stuck at the minute. We have a drain nearby, but that takes the surface water and is connected to a storm drain at the road which eventually way on down leads to a small river. For waste water we have a septic tank (plastic).

I've been reading up on this and there is a lot of conflicting information with regards to draining to septic tank. Some seem to have done it for years with no issues, others state that it can cause problems and should definitely be avoided (one being breaking down concrete - but our tank is plastic).

I'd imagine this is not a unique situation at all in Ireland. Anyone on here in a similar situation? What did you do? Looking for advice on here but will likely contact local council too to see what they say.

Installer put the hose to the surface water drain saying it should be fine but I have the system shut off as I'm not happy with it. Just want to do it once and do it right!
