Some good proposals on here. Here's my pick from them:

    a) - Make total rep disappear from under username but keep it in existance privately

    and

    b) - Make rep given to a user incl comments appear in their profile including post link (but do not display total rep)

    and

    c) - Zero all counters first

I both second and third these options. :)
If the reason you get rep is private then your total should be too.

Since the post count started well before the rep system, a rep/postcount ratio is meaningless.

its meaningless if you have 5000 posts and 1 rep square, I would argue that its not if you have 20 posts and 10 rep squares.
Unless you are one charismatic mutha...

The difference between postcount and rep is that only the admins can change your post count.

    http://www.boards.jp/forums/showpost.php?p=151919&postcount=1

that is the boards.jp slant on rep and it looks from reading the site that it is pretty much adhered to.

dealing severly with people on the internet might be a pipe dream the whole time. but the obvious breaches of some basic rules regarding rep would be pretty obvious.

making the rep count private would probably defeat the purpose of the system. but like greebo said, there should be rules. this system was introduced to boards before rules about its use were considered, apart from the obvious one that it should not be used to hurl abuse at someone.

I think there are sites that cater for this sort of thing if you look.

Anything that goes on in the Cuckoo's Nest, stays in the Cuckoo's Nest.

Please stop complaining that you hate rep, then complain you have negative rep or complain about the thread in The Cuckoo's Nest. All that shows is that you indeed care about rep.

Who is adding more to the community, the person with 5000 or 20 posts....?

BTW is there someone with 20 posts and 10 rep points? Can we have a top 10 of these heros? :D

    Cuckoo's Nest?

Rep is a feature of the boards, you can't ignore, as eventually you'll see a thread about it, or someone will mention it in a thread

I dunno where you got that conclusion, but then again, you are an idiot.

Search before posting a rep thread next time, and you will see that this subject has come up before.

The rep system, proving that shallow people recieve emotional trauma from a meaninless popularity system over the internet since late 2004.

I like to think of it as our version of those bad angsty teenage dramas that keep getting imported fom the States. Its turned half of boards into Valley Girls...

Because it's usually a good indicator of who's posts are worth reading. You have negative rep and everything I've read from you has been whiny and irritating this leads me to the conclusion that (rep-whoring aside) it's a fairly good indicator.

That hit the nail squarely on the head there, so I've +repped you.

See, the rep system can work...

    Time for a list methinks:

What has the rep system done for us anyway?

    1. Rewards users who are creative or contribute in some way.
    2. Cuts down on one word "lol" type posts.
    3. Provides a currency of sorts for boards, even rep whoring just enhances the community aspect building of the system.
    4. Gives feedback to people who normally wouldn't have recieved any.
    5. Makes it easier to indentify morons.
    6. Gives the fight the power gang something to whinge about.
    7. There is, of course, no seventh item on this list.
    8. Provides interesting reading in Feedback.
    9. Provides an alternative to flaming within a thread.
    10. It's fun.
