Reputedly this is a good time of year to pick up a car from a dealer. Any tips on getting the best price out of them? I'm a ****e haggler. Looking for an 00/01 car. Does the pre-xmas thing apply to them too, or just to 04 cars?

AFAIK dealers tend to be occupied at this time of year with generating sales for the new year, however presumably they are also keen to shift all cars as they will probably be worth slightly less in the new year, as they are seen as a year older.

This probably applies to buying a car any time of the year (and I am probably stating the horribly obvious):
If you know what car you want to get, and it is an easy enough car to get, then set a maximum price you will pay (if you are trading in, then also the minimum you will accept for your car) and search for the cars on www.CBG.ie. Check a few of them out, and if you are not happy with what they are offering, just walk out on them. If you don't get quite the deal you are looking for, see if they will throw in a free service or something that is pretty much as good as cash.

what type of motor do you have in mind?

most dealers would be more interested in getting new car sales instead of selling second hand cars!!! think of it this way, you go into a garrage and see a lovely 01 or 02 car and start thinking about buying that instead of a new car the dealers would loose out on another new car sale so they up the prices of the second hand cars so new cars will look more tempting to customers

Indeed, wait untill mid-late January, then you have a lot of dealers who have just taken a lot of trade ins against new sales, and will want to get rid of them fairly sharpish

If you are trading in a car dont bother as the car will be vauled as next years car

The only chance of a bargain is to go to a frachaised dealer with a small compound or with building work going on, they will want to clear the compound for next years arivals

You could try a sole second hand seller

    Good luck anyway

What a load of rusted pig iron

The dealer makes more money out of second hands than new cars its less than 2 per cent profit on a new car, a dealer would prefer to sell a second hand car at this time of year its reducing stock carried over into the next year which means less to write off
