    Hello
Im not a student of engineering and have no experience in relation to it, but I have an idea for an invention. And I need a bit of help to realise it.

The object will be made out of plastic, and has to be very precise, down to the millimetre or smaller.

It will be a small enough object though, definately in the region of 20x20x20 cm.

As you can see I have no idea where to start, so all help will be greatly appreciated!

Is there a question in that? What exactly do you want?

I would call that a big object! Size is relative :)

Maybe it has slipped your mind that 20cm == 200mm?

While it would be alot easier to get the info I need by telling everyone what my idea is, unfortunately that would also mean giving my idea away :( !

So, basically what Im looking for is to be pointed in the right direction of where to go WITH an idea, that is not fully completed in design, that requires the involvement of a company or companies that could (mass) produce a plastic object going by a design I could provide them with.

Also, since I have not yet completed my design, a company that could also produce the odd proto-type cost effectively, as well as undertake the final mass production would be preferable.

So I hope you can see my position here. I have an idea for a design, but dont know where to go from here with it.

    Regards and Thank You

Could you not patent the idea/design?

There are several companies who can produce rapid prototypes for you - you need to have an idea of unit cost and the type of plastic you want to make the final design in. You will also need a 3d CAD drawing or drawings from which to generate them - I use Solidworks.

There are lots of companies who will be able to advise on production scaling also - will the part be moulded or machined?

As for patenting, you will need €100k for a basic global patent and the ability to commercialise your idea quickly to prevent others inventing 'around' your patent. Very often you will find that your idea isn't unique, carry out a search here to see if your idea exists in any form.

To give better advice I would need to know what sector (medical/electronic/leisure/transport) your idea falls into but you can always PM me and I'll help if I can.

If you are going to prototype before protecting your invention, make sure you get the prototyping company to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

Obviously, it would be better if you sought protection before any disclosure to anyone, in explicit or implied confidence.

Next -if you need to do 'the rounds' to raise K for financing the protection- same M.O.: get everybody to sign an NDA (& if they don't, keep away).

Investors/M'facturers will be looking at your level of commitment to the idea, i.e. how much of your own € you're going to put on the table (to finalise the design, protect the IP, etc.). If you expect them to pay for your protection then pay you license fees, (1) wake up ;) (2) it just doesn't happen /never has / never will...
