I don't believe that it is morally right for someone to be married to a person of the same sex and that makes me a bigot?
Just because I believe that someone is doing something that is wrong doesn't make me anything but a person excersising their right to have an opinion!

Believing it doesn't make you a bigot.
Denying those couples the civil rights as a partnership, (which hetrosexual couples take for granted) does make you a bigot.
The main ones being inheritance, property ownership, income assesment.

Believing it and having an opinion are your rights. Forcing your beliefs and opinions onto others in the form of laws is persecution and discrimination.

I think 'marriage' is a bad word to use, as it is strongly linked to religion and reproduction. Many religions object to homosexuality, and reproduction is kind of difficult.

I can't see how anyone could object to a co-habiting gay couple being allowed to sign a civil contract which gives them the same partnership rights as a hetrosexual married couple.

I suggest you go through the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual forum, where there's numerous threads about gay marriages, including a great post rebutting the common arguments used against gay marriage (that it devalues the institution of marriage).

For example, recently one of the arguments used, an Irish Times editorial, was that marriage is an investment by the State. Couples that get married may contribute back to the State by having children. The author claimed that this could never happen in a homosexual marriage and therefore it shouldn't occur. Immediately you could rebut that with a number of issues including: adoption, IVF/surrogate children or pointing out that, by that tokenisitic argument, you would need to forbid barren/infertile couples from marrying given that they can't procreate.

Here's a great rebuttal of many of the arguments url="http://komejo.com/linked.php?datetime=2004-02-17::09:22:00&title=Snow,%20Snow,%20Snow"]link[/url@
12 reasons why gay people should not be allowed to get married

    1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control.

    2. Heterosexual marriages are valid becasue they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can't legally get married because the world needs more children.

    3. Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

    4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if Gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

    5. Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is illegal.

    6. Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities.

    7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire counrty. That's why we have only one religion in America.

    8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

    9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

    10. Children can never suceed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

    11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to things like cars or longer lifespans.

    12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "seperate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Seperate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as seperate marriages for gays and lesbians will.

Marriage is a social, religious, spiritual, or legal union of individuals. This union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding and the married status created is sometimes called wedlock.
Marriage is an institution in which interpersonal relationships (usually intimate and sexual) are acknowledged by the state or by religious authority. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it.

Therefore, Gay people should be allowed to marry each other. QED.

    That was easy. :)

Yeah, I reached the same conclusion sometime in the four years since my last post on this thread.
