I'm thinking about heading to Australia with the missus for a year, maybe less, we're not too sure yet, it won't be for a few months in any case.

I'm a Java Programmer with about 4 years experience, I'll be hoping to get some similar work out there but wouldn't mind doin something crap if I was near some good surf.

I'm sure at least a few of ye have done the whole Australia thing, got any tips or advice?

    TIA

Was there this time last year :( ... loved it, everything about it but for the life of me couldn't get an IT job, not even tech support and I had > 3 years quality post-grad experience...

Plenty of jobs shovelling ****e tho'! (not literally).

If Sydney is your spot settle in Bondi Junction to be near the surf at Bondi and Tamarama. Else Manly is a bet. An unwanted side-effect however is that the area crawls with GAA shirted, red faced, plonkers.

Cheers, sounds good except for the red-faced plonkers!

Any advice at all on how to get set up before you head out? Know any good recruitment agencies or anything like that?

http://www.lester.com.au - are an IT placement service that specialize in work visa holders but didn't help us much.

http://www.recruitoz.com - are a half decent bet for other jobs.

Apart from that local news papers and literally asking around is alway a good way.

I highly recommend that when your there you see the less travelled routes - Tasmania, Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria, such amazing contrasts. New Zealand is amazing also.

Bring as much money as you can!! BUT ABOVE ALL: if you find yourself spending more than you earn it is time to get out and start travelling... far to many spend their time in Sydney or Melbourne, end up broke and have to go home without seeing anything.
