Nominations here for what you thought was the most over-rated movie of 2004. What movie, either publically or critically acclaimed, left you cold and wondering what all the fuss was about?

To be eligible, the film they starred in must have been released on Irish cinema screens during the year 2004. Each voter can only nominate a maxiumum of two titles. Any further ones shall be ignored.

Lost In Translation - absolute garbage, talk about a film that is boring and goes nowhere. Yer wan with the lips is exactly just that, a girl with big lips. Murray is ok in it (I mean only ok) and the soundtrack is ok too but all the hype that surrounded it was just hype, it was a real letdown.

    Troy.
Shrek 2. Good but not as good as it was made out to be and certainly not as good as the original.

    matrix reloaded

I don't think that was technically overrated, seeing as most people agreed it was completely tosh.

For me personally, Shrek 2 and Finding Nemo were very poor.

    Matrix was last year.

My 1st vote goes to Hero as well.

My 2nd goes to 'Shaun of the Dead' - very highly rated by many, including here on boards, and yet I barely laughed...

    Kill Bill volume 2

I thought Hero was very good... As for Lost in translation, it was one of the best films of the year!!!

    My votes would go for:

    Shrek 2
    Shark Tale

I often find that animations are over-rated by all critics etc anyway... its usually confirmed..

I'll go with Saw and Fahrenheit 9/11(It wasn't a patch on the Bowling for Columbine)

And as over-rated as I felt Lost in Translation was.... I believe it was in the cinemas last year.

    F 9/11

as for lost in translation: the best i could find:
Release Date (UK): 09 January 2004
    (Certificate 15)

I liked kill Bill 2, Shrek 2 and Lost in Translation. I never saw any good reviews for Troy, and did see pleanty of bad ones. Eternal Sunshine... was a bit disappointing but it wasn't actually bad.

My vote is: The Station Agent!

The incredibles. 7/10 at best. Nothing I hadnt seen before!

    IRobot was just poor..

    saw (good but overrated)
hero (extremely overrated, although pretty good)

    Troy
    Day After Tommorow

I don't think Hero was overated. I never saw it hyped up or oversold. It's a beautifully crafted movie. Not one of the best movies of the year, but certainly not overated.

    1. lost in translation
    2. collateral (good but not THAT good)

BTW, I think there should be a culling on thread of some of the nominees that weren't ever (by any stretch of the imagination) 'rated' movies to begin with eg Troy & possibly Saw.

    Saw

    My 2 are :
Lost in Translation (complete and utter crap)
    I Robot

I actually thought Kill Bill 2 was a very good film, and thought Saw was very enjoyable too - I disagree with Saw being overrated, the first time I heard of the movie was 5 mins before I went to see it in the cinema and looking back I dont remember any tv ads or posters or anything hyping it up. And theres no way Hero was overrated, and even if it was in some way, it lived up to the hype surrounding it. Brilliant movie, strong storyline - amazing cinematography (eg:
the real time arrows scene, and the water fight scene).

    Shrek 2.
Lame movie, especially when compared to the incredible The Incredibles.

Troy. Orlando Swoon at his worst.... Also King Arthur. Talk about historical inaccuracies, that leather boob tube was disgraceful....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,148 ✭✭✭✭Lemming

Kill Bill Vol.2 - absolute, utter, tripe.

Honourable mention: "Troy" for managing to condense the Illiad into a two week time-frame ....

I've not seen "The Day after tomorrow" yet so can't comment on it. Nor have I seen "King Arthur" yet. I wont say "Lost in Translation" since despite my opinion of it, it wasn't hyped the way my two nominations were.

    Fahrenheit 9/11.

Not only was it a terrible, simple-minded and manipulative collage with a voiceover pretending to be a documentary, but by including so many inaccuracies, Mike Moore used up all the best arguments before the election campaign and gave the right-wing far too many opportunities to dress up George W as the victim of a smear campaign.

Shame on you Moore; and shame on you Tarantino pissing on what was left of the few credible film prizes going (Cannes...). Even you should have spotted a dud when you saw one.

    Fahrenheit 9/11
Hero - just a lengthy music video, with not much music.
