There are worse ways to go but we've lost a true genius, and that's a tragedy it'll take a while to get over. I think it must have given him great pleasure to know, even as he died, how much he acheived, and if I were to die with my guitar in my hands, and a legacy behind me anything like his, I'd go peacefully and happily knowing the world had been a better place for my contribution in life.

I don't see how anyone who gets murdered can go peacefully? How is getting murdered a decent way to go? Dime had a lot more to offer, he was starting to work on the second Damageplan album, he was back playing Dean guitars, they were bringing out a new signature guitar, it's a ****ing tragedy the guy was taken just as he seemed to be getting up a head of steam again. He had so much yet to live for, he was only 38 FFS! This is a sickening crime. Really, what sort of country calls itself civilised yet makes it so ****ing easy for twisted mother****ers like Dime's killer to get firearms?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,918 ✭✭✭Deadwing

Well, put it this way, alot of people are taken before they even get the chance to make an impact. Dime made a huge impact and his music influenced a generation of metal guitarists. He'll never have to suffer the indignity of old age, or the travesty of getting crap and recording ****e like St. anger.

The webmaster for the official PANTERA and DOWN websites has posted a statement with former Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo's blessing about the murder of Dimebag Darrell.

"I don't have a big official statement. I do have a lot of inside knowledge on the Pantera feud from Philip's side and tonight he gave me the green light to let everyone else in on what I know. He trusts me to do this, and I take 100% responsibility for anything that is inaccurate, but I'm confident you all know I'm not going to touch on this subject unless it's from the heart. He didn't even give me any specifics except for the final part of this post... he just wants me to tell people what I know to be true.

Philip loved Darrell like a brother, always. They accomplished things together that most wouldn't even dare to dream. None of us can know what it's like to be riding such a big machine, it changes the face of music and brings joy millions of people's lives around the globe. The rewards are big, but the stress is unimaginable if things don't go perfectly. Yes, Pantera broke up and there was a lot of **** talking through the media. There are two people on this board (WOLVIE and NGJ) who would periodically ask me about what's going to happen with Pantera in the future. I told them each time that I don't know when, but I'm 100% sure that we will see Pantera together again. I told them that when Pantera does get back together, you will know somebody who never lost faith, not for a second. Why did I tell them this? Because I know Philip loves those guys and when he was ready, he would reach out to them and try to make it work again. I had the feeling that one morning (afternoon maybe), all the CFH boys would just roll out of the rack and say 'let's go!'

Of all the time I've spent with Rex and Philip, I never badgered them about Pantera, but the subject did come up every once in a while. As for Rex, he would refer to the state of things simply as 'silly nonsense.' All I ever got out of Philip was something like 'nyaaaa... I just don't feel like sitting down and writing Pantera riffs right now,'... and that's it! No crazy accusations, name calling, or carrying on. As a matter of fact, in the middle of all the heat, Philip described Vinnie as 'the perfect drummer' and that Vinnie could drum more perfect than a drum machine if he so chose. What he said of Dime, he also repeated tonight. 'The best of the best.'

It's sad that the media would irritate the situation so much. Countless times, Kate and I would listen in on Phil doing interviews. Always, always, always, the jackals wanted Pantera dirt. Sometimes Philip would give it to them, sometimes he would not. However every single time I was there, he expressed his love for, and wished luck to Vinnie and Dime but that was somehow left out of the final print more times than not. I was at Philip's house a few weeks ago and I informed him that I handle the Official Pantera site now, and he asked me if I talked to Dime. I said 'No, when was the last time YOU talked to him?' with a sigh, he said 'three years.' Not a '****in right three years', not a 'yeah three years and it's gonna be three more'... but the dude was genuinely disappointed about the situation. I could tell...the time to patch things up was drawing near.

There's more I want to share, but it's almost 5AM right now, and I just managed to hold myself together long enough to get that out.

Philip isn't hiding out or waiting for the right moment to speak, he's in Texas right now searching for answers to this tragedy the best he can. There was one thing he asked of me, that I humbly bring to you all:

'Darrell my brother. The best of the best.'"

    - Philip H Anselmo

"Darrell (Dimebag) Abbott was known around the heavy-metal world for his scary stage persona. The burly lead guitarist for a group called Damageplan adorned his body with leather and tattoos, and wore a scraggly goatee he often dyed red. He spoke his own language, which friends called "Dimebonics," and enjoyed the party lifestyle, frequently ordering up his favorite drink, a "black-tooth grin": whisky with only "a splash of Coke." In reality, friends told NEWSWEEK, 38-year-old Abbott was a common type among aging rock-and-roll performers: gruff and rebellious on the outside, but gentle under the stage makeup."

Do you reckon this cretin just took his head out of his ass long enough to look at a picture of Dime and then stuck it back up and wrote this nonsense?

I doubt it. I read it again and I came to the same conclusion: It's weakly written, poorly researched, riddled with cliches and stereotypes, has questionable grammar and uses phrases a poor junior cert english student would be ashamed of.

    My favourites have to be
Heavy metal has always been a magnet for zealots and misfits.
    and
For a moment, Abbott's demonic fantasy world became fatally real.
    wtf?
I mean come on, compare it with the article Ph3n0m posted where you can tell that the piece took more than 5 minutes to research and write.

It looks like a piece they got the intern to write to me and the sub-editor should be ashamed of himself for passing it.

Because obviously Heavy Metal makes teenagers worship Satan, and read books of evil, like Wicca books and Harry Potter...

This is going to make the media's view of Heavy Metal so much worse, thanks to just the one crazy fan.

    Thanks for the pic, -AlcoholicA-

Well I think they might have just been on about the gun laws over there. People being sold guns over the counter, regardless of what mental state they are in? Very dangerous law to have.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Indeed, a mentally unstable teenager can get a gun before they can legally drink or get married. Hmmmm.... kids and guns...
