LOL @ all of this. The technique can work but to say
You'll take the person down regardless of size difference, every time.

is farcical, and can be proven to be untrue very easily.

No matter, to the poster, try it if you perform it correctly, it will work.

Thanks for the technique, I tried (again) but I can't reach from the position i'm in.
Still on the "make sure I never get caught in one" theroy.
    Maybe I'm just crap.
On the other techs described here:

I'm not prepared to go to the floor unless the hold is near broken or seriousley loosened.
Columok, I know you think the neck is pretty hardy but I see how fragile the human body is every day. It won't take much to maim/cripple you with a neck or back injury.

I know I'm looking for the magical perfect technique here but it can't do any harm to look.

whats a pondry?? is it to ponder a quandry??

I'll chip on this great technique pondry anyway: trying to unbalance someone by pushing their head up and over their ankles while you're down at waist height and facing in the opposite direction to the push ( and with you own head being controlled by bad dude too) doesnt make much sense. The mechanics of the situation are against you.

I've seen this technique being taught over the years in jj but never seen anybody use it freestyle, people instictively go for the more obvious option of scooping the bad headlocking type dudes legs up off the floor. Groin slapping is good too but you really cant do that to a friend.

    It doesn't work on Tuesdays.

I've really got to check what I write! :D

Syke, the link you've posted gives a good description, proper hip position is a fundamental in the clinch. However reaching the head seems pretty difficult. I'll try it again.
We NEVER accept something as effective on someone's word! Regardless of who that person is grandmaster, little sister, coach, fighting champion, whatever!

I've seen some fairly outlandish sh!t from top level instructors and fighters that I don't think are suitable for the non genetically gifted athlete and I'd never pass on. That's why I've pretty much stopped going to the latest Brazilian seminar, and also why I like the SBGi ones. Always simple, fundamental points, not the latest esoteric technique.
Colm put forward a theory and is always open to people challenging that theory and asking for proof!

It's along this line of thinking that I stop calling them "techniques" when I coach. I say something along the lines of "Okay guys, here's a few ideas I've found consistantly successful, let's try them out" By the end of the session, we've improved on our technique and had some good training too. It's getting a great response so far.

As far as posting on message boards go I think it's a good way to expose yourself to other opinions (as we're doing now Syke) and it can be a way of challeging yourself, if you're open to it. You just have to not react to what people are saying but try to take it onboard and test it (mentally or in the gym).

As for the "well then you're not doing it right" comments that are spoken a lot by a lot of people. Yes, it may be true. BUT, and this is a general statement, if something can't be falsified through testing it has no business in the science of self defence.

    dabhal,

Have you're training partner give about 10% resistance and work with that. Then up it to 20%, 30% 50% and then 75% (you never really need to go 100% in training, that's what competitions are) and see if you can work it out. BTW why do you not want to go the ground? The headlock escape I've in mind easily allows you to stand up once you've broken free.

    Peace and Love Y'All,
    Colm

One of the most "Martial Artsy" ways out I've seen was to trap the Bad Guys (BG) free hand , the one he's hitting with, not holding on with. Say your on his right with his right arm around your neck.Trap his left arm, if you can with your left hand.Reaching around his back to grab his elbow, coat, whatever. Now your hopefully not getting hit anymore, grab his right wrist with your right hand and pull down on it.You probably won't move it much, and if you can wtf did you let that wimp get you in a headlock for? Anyway, as you pull down, turn your head to the right, away from his body. This lifts your right shoulder a little, your body being stronger than his one unbraced arm (hopefully). Now pop your head back and out. If you can keep hold of the right arm and pull it up his back as you kick in the back of his knee to drop his body down.
If you got this far ok you can either leg it (Street) or try for a rear naked strangle(class) or just bunny punch the guy. Hope this helps and if I meet TwoKingMick ever I'd be happy to try to get out of his headlock this way ;)
Hell, we may both learn a bit! One of us will at any rate! I still prefer a ball slap if it's serious or other stuff if it's "Life and Death" dun dun dunnnnnnn........

Colm and myself took pictures of a good headlock escape at training on Thursday. Hopefully we'll have the pictures up soon.

You should defo come up to train Musashi or we could point you in the direction of somewhere nearer to you.

I'll buy you either a Flake or a Picnic if you come up to train ;) !

    Where are you living?

Im in Co. Waterford, did go out to Tramore a few times to train with Mr. Sullivan at his Hapkido club. I think he is graded under Royce Gracie in BJJ as well?
At least there's a TKD club after opening up here again, not a lot of choices around town.
