I know this sort of question keeps popping up, and that the people who supply the answers must be getting pretty peed off, but: ...

eircom b/band w/ netopia router and mentor gigabit switch.
    1x win2000 pc
    1x win xp home pc

both connected to net (are online) via switch and router but cannot see each other.
both in same subnet: 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 (255.255.255.0) and same workgroup. any ideas? changing os is not an option at this time.

sorry this should be in nets/comms

    follow up:

the win2000 machine is connected to the router directly while the winXP machine is connected via switch (both will be on switch with another few pcs shortly). What do I need to config to get them to see each other?

    Right-click on My Computer.
    Get Properties, Network Identification Tab,
    Click on Network ID button.
Setup your machine for Computer connected to LAN, WorkGroup.
Your machines' names should be in full caps, as should the workgroup.
Might need to fiddle with WinXP's firewall settings aswell.

SMB/CIFS sucks by the way :)

    okay.
    now i have: router---switch---2 pc's
pc1: name OFFICE in WORKGROUP ip 192.168.1.7 sub 255.255.255.0
    pc2: name COMP2 in WORKGROUP ip 192.168.1.2 sub 255.255.255.0

both machines have same default gateway and are accessing the internet, and can see themselves in Network Places, but can't see each other.

    any further ideas?

Can they ping one another ?

Have you shared the drives on each P.C. ?

w2k machine can ping everything, but WXP can't ping other machine.
root is shared in both machines.

when i try to browse network places i get error message about servers not available.
