    Jimi Hendrix (def. top of the list - without him we wouldn't be where we are today technically)
    Thin Lizzy
    Van Halen
    MotorHead
    Guns N'Roses
    Pink Floyd
    AC/DC

    Please note I'm selecting these bands from the point of view of what they've achieved in relation to the Metal industry. So whether or not you agree with the list, they[the bands listed] have contributed something that was groundbreaking to the industry at some point.

    Bear in mind that metal back then was very different to what it is now. In the 1970s they would have been considered very close to metal, if not in there somewhere. Look at Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin. By today's standards, not exactly the hardest music out there.

    If you remember the 1980's when metal was the 'In' thing, you'll remember such groups as WhiteSnake and Bon Jovi being considered metal. It's all about the perception at the time really.

    ok i dont have a top 10 but my favourite metal / rock band of all time are in flames they roxor :D
    im also a fan of other stuff (i know this isnt all heavy metal) foo fighters, papa roach, greenday, most types of music tbh :)
    im also interested in peoples opinions on rock music as i only got into it pretty recently and want to know what the best stuff is

    Well I started off listening to Metallica but have went off them since... but definately Pantera and Old Slayer (Hell Awaits, Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss albums) are the ones to listen to. Maybe even some Old Sepultura depending on what type of music you used to listen to.
