Plus the re-made FF VI Battle Music ('The Decisive Battle') is the best track on "The Black Mages" album. 'Dancing Mad' isn't bad either.

Whatever happened to that 3D Chrono-Trigger remake that was being made by some bedroom programmers? Resurrection, I think the name was... must check and see what's happening there....

Edit: B0ll0cks!!! Square-Enix made them pull the plug. And it was looking so shiny and cool, too... hey, this might mean we're getting a re-make straight from Square... which wouldn't be all bad.

Similar... so to you FF IV, V and VI are all similar? WTF? The fact that they are all 2D shouldn't make them similar.
They are all utterly different games. IV with it's power-levelling motif. V had the Job system I so love. VI with the "pre-materia" Esper system. Man, if you think these games are similar, you obviously haven't played them enough!
Played them all through to the end once or twice.

All bland games with nothing particular to distinguish them, except Kefka for being one of the most overrated "villians" in gaming history.

did FF IV on the PS have the extra japanese stuff? Like Cecil having Dark Wave etc

Yes the version on the PS1 is the japanese hard type with no bits deleted. The programming room is there and the porn mag item (not as interesting as you think it is. They also did a retranslation although they left in the classic bad translation line 'You spoony bard!'.

"You Spoony bard!"... a classic line, along with my personal favourite "I, Garland, will knock you all down!"

I've actually won the jap version (Yes, in Japanese. No, I don't speak or read Japanese. Yes, it was hard.). Damn pr0n mag.
All bland games with nothing particular to distinguish them, except Kefka for being one of the most overrated "villians" in gaming history.

Kefka was pure evil! He wasn't even "power-hungry, want to be a god" Sephiroth evil. He was "Damn, it would be so much fun to poison this town..." evil.

FF4 had a certain something about it.... probably because it was my first FF game. So I won't comment on any "blandness" there.
FF5 had incredible depth... sure it's story wasn't as engrossing as FF7, but still... great gameplay.
But FF6... If you call FF6 bland, you are calling FF7 bland. It's THE SAME STORY. Just "modernised" in FF7. - Bad guy wants ultimate power/destroy the world. One female main(ish) character to stop him... and fail for the most part. Crystals that hold the power of magic(Espers/Materia). I could argue further but I'd rather go play FF6 again.

Anyway... FF12 is looking ok. We'll see.

Well you're not missing out on much to be honest, I've always seen them as very japanese overblown love stories with very predictable characters and plots. And don't get me started on the whiney runt girly boy main characters.......But that's just my opinion. The music however generally makes up for the complete lack of charm and gameplay.

If you want good rpg's, then play fallout or planescape: torment, just give me an opening and i'll praise torment.....

    Renounce your blasphemies dogboy!

what you have described is the diabolical FFVIII. Give the others a chance.

I did, liked VII at first, played it again and got bored of walking around pressing O at people after not too long. Played X to the part with tidus and yuna in the spring and nearly puked. I loved IX, but that's only because quina and vivi are so frickin cool. I don't know, games for me are more about interactivity and playing the game than watching loads of cut scenes with a spiky haired guy whinging about something or other.

And don't tell me about the stories being great, all they do is put a predictably love story in front of "lets save the world from evil" or some variant of it. Play grim fandango or torment for a great story....But the ff music is great, got the soundtracks to X and crystal chronicles right here.

Used to be VII, changed to X, VII was revolutionary in its time, but X is still much better (IMO).

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭Steven

Those Eastern style RPGs are cack... and yet, there's just something about levelling that makes it all seem worthwhile at 4am when you finally turn the bloody thing off. Oh, and I'd agree with Thordon. Nostalgia does strange things to people.

    Baldurs Gate 2 forever!

what about ff2 and ff3 for the snes

  • Registered Users Posts: 906 ✭✭✭FuzzyWuzzyWazza

FFVII was without a doubt the best of the series, both with respect to gameplay and story line. I can remember it being a big deal whenever you got to see andther FMV in the game, which looked SWEET!! (at the time).

It's gotta be Final Fantasy VII, It's got the manga stlye character models and a great story with soem unique characters. Even if the materia system did turn your party into demi gods, it was still a great game and the best IMO.

FF2 is the worst for me. The levelling up is ridiculous but to make matters worse there is levelling down as well. Its so bad that square left the bug in the PS1 remake that allows you to level up relatively easily.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,283 ✭✭✭fixXxer

Final Fantasy 10! 7 was epic, but 10 had Auron who was epic enough to carry that whole side of the game. Remember the cut scene before u fight Yunalesca? *spoilers* Plus the way at the end you had to kill your comrades, the Aeons, and the best characters being dead or not real. Things like that made it a bit more personal then 7. For me anyway.

10-2 was good if u took it for what it was; a fun afterthought to the FF10 universe. There was an interesting little story there under the campness of the dancing and dress spheres (plus the whole finding out what happened after Sin's destruction),and its not like it was a million miles different from the other final fantasies, just having 3 characters doing the job classes that 8 characters did in previous games.

Well i had more fun playing 10-2 than any of 1 through 5! It was an "laughing out loud" kind of fun rather than a "What story twist will be next?" kind of fun, which was a nice diversion at the time from all the other RPG's i was playing at the time.

I really liked X-2 at first, but after the novelty wore off it got boring. Cleared it once, never got anywhere near 100%.

VII has to be my all time favourite. It also happens to be the first one I played, which is probably a swaying factor. Although Suikoden 1 was the first Japanese RPG I ever played and I much preferred Suikoden 2 and 3. That was followed shortly by VII, then I've played everything in both series since(including the remakes of old FFs), and dabbled in a few others although they're my two favourite series.

I loved everything about VII. The story, the characters, the gameplay, it was great. I liked the story in VIII but not the gameplay. I loved the battles in X but the story wasn't great. What VII had was a wonderful story with characters you cared about, so you always wanted to know what was going to happen next. The battle system was flexible enough to not interfere when you were concentrating on the story and just wanted to get through random battles quickly, but be deep enough to make for some really exciting boss battles and lots of party customization. The golden saucer was fantastic, I probably spent more hours on that part of VII alone than on your average whole game. The amount of extra things to do after you'd completed the game the first time. The unanswered questions left by the story that really make you think. And of course Aeris. There's never been a scene in any game or film to touch that scene.

he was talking about ff2 not ffx-2, different games altogether

the levelling up in ff2 is ridiculous to the point where i found it impossible to get any form of a good charachter

And this from some one who calls themselves after one of the most annoying and worst FF characters from one of the worst games in the series  but at least I had some fun playing FF8. I tried to get into FFX-2. Played until the half way through chapter 4 and then stopped playing because i just wasn't enjoying it at all. I can enjoy RPGs with bad battle systems as long as they have a good story or characters I like. An example is FF8, dreadful story, really annoying characters, flawed battle system and yet I seemed to enjoy the experience. FFX-2 had none of these things. I have finished all RPGs I've played including the god awful Legend of Dragoon but FFX-2 was the only RPG I had no wish to go back to.

Are you sure your meaning of the word "enjoy" is that same as the rest of us??

Well it wasn't great but it was tolerable despite the draw system being nothing other than a complete pain in the sack. It kept me playing despite the fact that I would have put my fist through the TV if it would have hurt Squall, Rinoa, Zell and Co. except Selphie. I wanted to rip Selphies voice box out so she couldn't say any more americanised bimbo-ism and then break every bone in here body for all the cringeworthy moments.

And then there was the part were they all found out the knew each other as children but some how forgot because of their GFs (I'm not spoiling the story, since the story is so bad that there really isn't much of a story). Now that almost made me lose faith in videogames forever.

And then there was the ridiculously hard last boss. I hadn't died once in the game and sailed through it with no attempt to level up my characters outside the main quest. And then the last boss had a stupidly high difficulty spike. It was either level up on that stupid island with all the supposedly hardest enemies or filthy dirty tactics. I choose the filthy dirty tactics. A 3 hour boss fight later and at 2.30 at night the credits had finally stopped.

And then the silly mr. monkey sidequest that had you skimming imaginary stones on a lake. I bet the genius behind the Gummi ship in Kingdom Hearts was behind that!

Actually I hated the game! Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!!!!!

I dunno why FFVIII is getting such bad press. I was actually my favourite. I thought the junction system was cool, seen as it was new, not like any of the previous games. It had a good story, brilliant graphics (for its day), decent FMVs, brilliant sound track and tough enough battles. (especially omega weapon!)
FFIX was very good too. I'm replaying it at the moment on a psx emulator. Quality game, although its way too easy.
FFIV, FFV and FFVI were pretty good too, although I didnt play them until the snes was gone, so I probably didn't appreciate them as much as I should have.
FFX was good I I much prefered the retro map walking thing rather then having to walk from one place to another on road. It made the game too linear. Graphics were cery good though.
FFX-2, I didn't like. Whats with that stupid "brotha" guy? Feckin annoying!
I've never played FFVII! Am I the only one?

No but you should be ashamed of yourself :D Go play it and see for your self how FFVIII is utter tripe in the face of true excellence.
