I see Mourinho is saying he'd like to get Barcelona beacuse it'd be a good challenge! I must say i enjoy his comments most times i just think they have to turn on him at some stage, itll be interesting to see what he says when they do.

Quite happy with the pool getting Bayer Leverkusen
Just glad to have avoided the Italians

I bet those Man Utd fans who said they were happy to play their home leg first take that back now. Milan are the kings of calculating, they'll just hold on in the first leg and go out and get what they want in the San Siro. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,220 ✭✭✭✭Lex Luthor

    Leverkusen no push overs.
Man U v Milan....looking forward to that one and Chelsea v Barca
oh yeah, nearly forgot about Juve v Real

Lot of big teams going out this round.

Didn't the "kings of calculating" beat Deportivo 4-1 at home last year and loose 4-0 away? Should be a great game....

They're are quite a good team and they're definately not to be underestimated. But I reckon over two legs Liverpool could do them this time.

Liverpool will be the only English team in the quarters..........

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,456 ✭✭✭kida

I would say Liverpool will prob be the only English team not in the Quarters - Werder will be delighted to draw them. Remember they knocked out Valencia and topped the group that also had Inter.

Utd will have to play Milan sometime - all depends on a good first leg - if we can get any victory it will force the Italians to attack and I feel United can always score away.

The first leg was played at home. Try and find the last time Milan lost in Europe when they played the 1st leg away. IMO People underestimate the difference it makes.

Huh? Liverpool have drawn Leverkusen, not Werder

The best possible draw for the Reds. Leverkusen will be no push overs, but we owe them one for 2002. I think Arsenal will prove to be too much for a Bayern team that are no longer the force they were.

Chelsea and Barca will be tough, very tough and could be decided on away goals. As for Man U, well it depends on which United team turns up and whether van Nistelrooy is fit or now.

For me though, the tie of the round must be Real Madrid and Juventus, I reckon (and hope) that the Spanish Globetrotters will go out.

I was sent the wrong draw in work  . Still only makes Liverpools draw harder. They knocked out Kiev and Roma.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 635 ✭✭✭johnor

the last time they played the away leg first was against Sparta Prague...not exactly in the man u class...granted they won 4-1 overall....

the previous time was against Ajax, they got a 0-0 in Amsterdam and won 3-2 at home....they went on to win it that year, beating Inter on away goals!!, in the Semi. I dunno how the goals went in the Ajax match....but 3-2 is hardly agreat home win...its obviously enough o go thru and to win them the CL at the end of the day. Dont think the 3-2 is hugely convincing.....i didnt search for the last previous time, if they were beaten over two legs or whatever...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Christ I knew that was going to happen, just knew it.

I honastly think Liverpool have the best chance of all the English teams to go through, I honastly believe that.

Arsenal have a very very tough game against a team that will simply foul them the second they get on any sort of break and mess up Arsenals game plan. It'll take some work for Wenger to win this match, but it'll be a damm close one.

Liverpool are in a very nice position, against a team not on form, 5th in the league atm if i'm not mistaken, and have really got some ability in europe, a lot of drive, especially seeing how Gerrard will do everything he possibly can to win this match, and they definally can win it.

Chelsea vs. Barca. Jesus what a game, I just pray that they are on a differnt night to Man Utd, I'd love to watch this game.
    Barca attack vs. Chelsea defence!
The hardest team in that group and they got them.
I think Chelsea's defence can hold out, however it is going to be up to Robben(who I think might be a little out of his league at this point) and Duff who will need to be at his absolute best.
Lampard Terry and Duff will win or lose this tie.

    Utd vs. Ac Milan.
Won't this be a fun tie
Of all the teams to get, you have to get the team that beats Barca :D
We had to play em eventually, and I guess now is a good a time as any.
I think United's defence can take on Milan, and I don't think they'll score at Old Trafford. Keano will be up for this game like nobodies business, out to show how good he is.
It's gona be a Van Nist peno that gets us a goal, and hes gona hammer it home :)
Away will be a hellish nail biting game, I honastly don't know what will happen, but I think that if we go into that game ahead, we can hold out and nick an away goal on the break.
I hope Saha is back for the game.
I think this game is gona be won by Giggs Keano and Scholes coming out to play and killing.
On the plus side, if we win this game, I don't believe there is anyone else in the cup who would beat us after that :)

p.s. if we are top of the league by this time we will walk this game

    Juve vs. Real
A walkover for Juve, I promise. Its gona be a slaughter, mayube 4-0 after aggregate.

    FC Porto v Inter Milan
    Inter are through

    Werder Bremen v Lyon
    Lyon are through

    PSV Eindhoven v Monaco
I'm happy PSV are through, good for them. Monaco are through :)

Ah I love the champions league, but the wait for the next game is going to kill me!

Chelsea have won plenty of game when Lampard was anonymous, I think Robben and Duff would be a lot more important. Without those two they're screwed.

a nice draw for utd, personally, i prefer to see utd up against the big guns, the best of the best rather than the likes of bremen or lyon.

if your gonna win it, you HAVE to beat the big guns at some stage and in a knockout tie, utd have every chance of beating ac milan. this is the sort of match manu are made for, big matches are when they turn on the style and from that point of view im a little relieved we dont have a 'banana skin' tie, were we're expected to win.

chelsea barca will be good game, as someone said , hope it doesnt clash with the manu match. i fancy chelsea to go through, they have quality throughout their side, no weaknesses. barca can break down anyone but i dunno whether they have the steel at the back and in midfield to keep control of a game against someone of their own high standard.

To be honest, I fancy all the English sides to be in the last 8. United should for once be underdogs, and I think that will suit them. Liverpool have by far the easiest tie of the English clubs, although Leverkusen are a reasonable team. Barcelona vs Chelsea is too close to call, but if anybody can beat Barca (apart from AC Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk of course! :p ), its Chelsea. Defensively they're strong, and that will count for a lot.

I think Bayern are a bit of a spent force in European football at the moment, but as they always say, "never write-off the Germans"! Arsenal owe them a good Inter-style kicking after the press shenanigans in 2001 anyway.

Simply can't predict this one - hope I get to see it.
    PHB wrote:
    Utd vs. Ac Milan.

United have to totally go at them at Old Trafford and be prepared for a few stinging counter-attacks. If they pull it off - a 2-0 win should do it - then the return leg will be cagey, probably 1-0 or 2-1. Can't stand either team, so it'll also be fun to watch.

On paper, and going on their last meeting, it looks that way. If Juve's defence stays injury-free it's hard to see them losing this, but otherwise the likes of Montero and Legrottaglie are not capable of withholding Real's attack. Owen could win this for them
    PHB wrote:

If they are, it'll have to be on away goals! I havne't seen much of Porto this year, but if they're even remotely like last year's model this will be the unstoppable force against the immovable object at one end and a duck-shoot at the other. Inter might have sorted out a decent defender in the meanwhile though - doubtful, the idiots pissed away Cannavarro.
    PHB wrote:

Fergie Knew well what he ws doing when fielding the reserves in the last game. United are better suited to play and beat the Italians and being the underdog really suits them. I believe united will go through but that said there's no point in staying in the comp if we're not good enought to win it. I'm looking foward to two cracking games no matter what the outcome.

7/4 is way too high for them just to win their home leg. Porto all the way at home. They still have superb players in Maniche, Quaresma, Diego, McCarthy, Costinha, Derlei, Luis Fabiano, the Greek full back they signed...

    Interesting draw,

I reckon Chelsea will turn over Barcelona. They are a far more solid team, and everyone is talking Barca up which will play into Mourinhos hands.

Arsenal will be a tough one, but I think Bayern will have to come out to win the first leg, and could get caught on the break. I still think Arsenal will need to win at home to go through though.

Liverpools draw is as good as they could get (bar Lyon). Still a tough game though, Leverkusen qualified from a tough group. I still think though Liverpool will be fired up after being dumped out a few years ago. Gerrard will be missing for the home leg, but Im delighted that he is missing at home rather than away. Seeing as Im a Liverpool fan, Ill go for Liverpool to go through, but I dont think it will be a shock if they go out.

United will have their work cut out. Regardless of what everyone says, Im sure all United fans would rather see them beat some smaller teams and get to the final and then lose to Milan, rather than get knocked out now. If for nothing else for the money and the experience all the players would get. I dont know what Ferguson was doing sending a crap team to Turkey. If they won the group they could be playing Bremen now! Milan have to much class all over the park. Forget Crespo, what about Kaka? And they are solid enough at the back to hold United. This will be Uniteds first test of the competition following an easy group, and I think this will cost them (again).

Having said all that, a lot will depend on what nick the various teams are in come the actual dates of the next round.

thats a bit silly logic so it is.
If Chelsea had come second they'd be playing Inter so therefore they should have come second?

easy to say with hindsight :)

Real Madrid v Juventus - Juventus (Real if their form changes could pose some problems for juve)
FC Porto v Inter Milan - Inter Milan
    Barcelona v Chelsea - Barcelona
Werder Bremen v Lyon - Bremen (good strong side. Great group stage results)
Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen - Leverkusen (good efficient side, qualified well. Not as good a draw as most pool fans would think)
PSV Eindhoven v Monaco - Monaco
Manchester United v AC Milan - AC Milan
Bayern Munich v Arsenal - Munich (I just fancy munchen for this one)
