Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey all,

    Quick question.

Im thinking about getting broadband installed. I want to use a wireless rig. The thing is that my pc is upstairs in the house and the phone line where the net comes in is downstairs. There are other phone lines but the one downstairs is the only one that I can use.

However, not only is it downstairs, it is in a converted garage.

This means that there would be an external house wall between the wireless router and my pc.

Would this cause much of a problem? I dont want to go out, buy some gear only for it not to work!

    Thanks,
    Gob. :)

Should be fine... You can get a good range on wireless routers. My router is downstairs and i can use the laptop online anywhere in the house and garden...

Well the real thing that I would be worried about is the fact that I want to put the router in the converted garage. The wall between the garage and the house isnt just a partition wall, its a full blooded cavity block wall.

Just worried that the signal might be affected by this...

Another problem to watch out for is the plasterboard. If it's foil-backed, that will give you problems.

Ideally, get a couple of mates with laptops and wireless cards to come round and test the connectivity from one room to the other.

If that's not possible, do you have a cordless phone? They operate in the same band as 802.11b. If you're in a position to place the base station and the phone in the garage and the room where your PC is (or vice versa), try it and see how the reception is. It's a quick 'n' diry test but if you've no reception then you'll probably have problems with the wireless.

    Regards,

    Liam

I do have a cordless phone and it does work in that particular room. None of my mates have wireless laptops though.

The basestation for the cordless phone is in the room next to the one where my pc is and I can use the phone in the garage no problems.

    Thanks lads...
