Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ireland up to 12th in FIFA rankings
    20/12/2004 - 11:28:09

Brian Kerr's Republic of Ireland have climbed two places to 12th in the latest FIFA world rankings following the positive start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The jump puts Brian Kerr's men ahead of Sweden and Denmark and immediately behind the United States.

Ireland are currently top of Group Four in the European section of the World Cup qualifiers after managing to secure a draw against France in Paris last October.

The French remain second in the FIFA rankings, behind world champions Brazil and ahead of Argentina.

Elsewhere, Northern Ireland remain sandwiched between Cyprus and El Salvador in 107th place, while England have slipped one spot from seventh to eighth. Wales have dropped five places from 63rd to 68th and Scotland are down nine places to 86th.

as I recall the rankings were only devised in 91, 92 or so. At that stage Ireland were as high as 6th or 7th. I'll have a rummage in googles magic box.

Our highest was indeed 6th, in the early 90's.

August 93, i.e. when the current rankings came out first....

I can. This team still hasn't reached its peak yet. Alot of the players aren't even 27 yet. And there is still lots of talent coming through.

    AMEN !

I have never really believed in the FIFA rankings. Always happy to see Ireland doing well but 12th and still behind the USA? I blame Bush ;)

I used to follow the Elephant Rankings

    http://www.elerankings.com/frameworldfootball.htm
The Elephant Ranking System is based on the following chart, which calculates 'Core Rating Changes' based on the match result and the relative strength of the opposition. These Core Rating Changes are then subject to weighting factors.

But they only put us at 12st.........and still behind the USA :)

Well the frame world rankings look very inaccurate. England in 3rd place, lol :)

Good to see Ireland at 12th. I would take the rankings with a pinch of salt since its very difficult to outline how good a team actually is. The only true reflection is the World Cup.

Still I think its a good reflection of how Ireland has come on. I agree with PORNAPSTER, this team is very young and is on the way up. The only real problem with Ireland is scoring goals but I think that will be solved in the next year or so.

I think Ireland will be 5th or 6th after the World Cup 2006:)

Being placed behind the USA (in both the rankings and the world cup) is something I think we will have to get used of.
The USA is coming on in leaps and bounds over the past few years, they had a great world cup in 2002 and expect them to do the same if not better next time.
All the American school kids (and immigrant kids from Latin America) that staretd playing soccer in the late 80s and 90s are now growing up so their selection pool has got so much bigger.
They could win a world cup in 12 years

What about all of our immigrant kids from Romania/Nigeria etc? Might be some Hagi's or Okocha's in there! ;)

USA aren't a bad team. They obviously haven't been playing the best of teams but they can only beat whats put in front of them and they are unbeaten in 14 games (including wins over Mexico and away to Poland). They came 3rd in the Gold Cup, losing to Brazil after extra time.
