IOL Pings, Limerick. Please Help.

The ping times that I get from IOL are seriously annoying.

Every 2mins or so, I get a ping spike to about 120 for about 2 seconds, and then it goes back to its 40, 40, 30 business, then again in roughly another 2 mins spikes to 120 or there abouts.

Now this might not seem so bad, but in games it translates into lagging quite intensly every 2 mins, now you can see how annoying that could be. Its pritty much unplayable.

Does anyone else have this problem, or does anyone know of anyway of fixing it?

    Thanks,
    -Coz.

I'm an IOL user bb use in dublin and I had a pretty crappy ping time back a few months ago and some other people had here too and we emailed iol and they sorted it. Get a nice ping of 50-70 in CS:S

See if you can find 4 other people in your area to email esat (including yourself) and they'll have a loook.

Could you post a tracert to jolt.co.uk to show where the problem is?

Its not that somewhere along the line that it jumps and stays up at say the 100ms plus, its that everynow and again like very 2 mins, there is a massive ping spike.. see below.

In the game this translates into alot of lagging, and is almost no good for a smooth game.

Im wondering could it be something operatine on my system that is making it jump everynow and again? its like as if something is being sent and recieved everynow and again?

I'm also in Limerick, and I tried pinging the same server for a few minutes, but didn't get anything like you are experiencing, and I don't think I ever have. Though sometimes I do get about 30 seconds to a minute of really bad pings, often getting disconnected from game servers because of this. Maybe it only happens in the evening though.

Well thats a good thing to hear I suppose, now it may be something to do with a program or something running on the PC.

Does any one have any idea what program or activity on my computer could be causing this kind of issue?

    Thanks.
    -Coz

Do you have anything else running when you're playing games that could be doing anything with the internet? MSN Messenger or anything like that? Any spyware? Try scanning your PC with Ad-Aware and Spybot if you haven't already. Then try closing every other program except for your firewall and anti-virus before running your game (or whatever), and try again.

I closed pritty much everything I could think of that would use the internet connection, including Zone alarm and MSN messanger, I even turn automatic updates off. I'm still getting the problem.

Ive also plugged all the other phones out in the house, and still have the problem.

What exchange are you on in limerick zilog?

Just did a couple of continuous tracerts, and it doesnt look good. It is IOL Broad bands problem, and its seriously pissing off.

Notice the way some of the time it would be fine, then you get these mad 200ms jumps at some of the IOL hops, this happens roughly every two mins.

    What can I do?

How do I get the stats printed like you guys have above?

I just ping using command prompt - have I gotta print screen? How do I then find the stats? Reason I ask is cos my pings spike the whole time - I get somewhere between 50-100 as standard with spikes up to 999 and serious packet loss?

    thanks for any help

There are two usefull commands King,

1: ping "ip address" which you know.

    and

2: tracert "ip address", this shows the "hops" you connection has to make to reach its destination.

If you want to ping something for a long period of time, more than the standard 4 times.
    Use:

    Ping "ip address" -t

When your finished finding the results, right click in the dos window, and click select all, then copy. Paste this into notepad, and edit it to shorten it, or to include only what you want to paste onto the post.

    -Coz.

I'm on the Caherdavin exchange, or whatever exchange deals with the area (I think there's a Caherdavin one). And you may want to not turn off ZoneAlarm when doing these tests - my brother accidentally went online without it once, and after about 5 minutes of normal web browsing he got the Sasser virus!

In the Command Prompt, you can just select whatever you want to copy with the mouse, and to copy it just press the right mouse button on it. Press the right button on the Command Prompt to paste stuff into it.

    Here's what I get:
    Tracing route to games2.iol.ie [193.120.123.135]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

      1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.1.1

    Trace complete.

I haven't noticed much variation from this after trying it about 10 times over the space of a couple of minutes... OK, wait:

yea its odd, im thinking thought that those hops maybe are not related to the ping spikes im getting if I just constantly ping a server, ie ping games2.iol.ie -t

because when you do that you dont seem to get any fluxuations from the 30-40ms bracket, yet when you do the tracerts you do see something.

Are you sure you done get a fluxuation if you constantly ping somewhere for a while?

I just had to say something as I've seen this kind of thread many times and there is a common misconseption about traceroute that I'd like to clear up if I can.

When someone does a traceroute and they see one hop in the path has a higher response than others this does NOT indicate a problem. A lot of ISP's configure their equipment to give ICMP responses a lower priority than transit traffic. This means the packets may stay in the buffer longer while user internet traffic is being processed before a response is sent.

A traceroute is only useful if one hop gives a slow response AND all other hops along the way also have high response times. In this situation it's useful for locating where a problem occurs.

ahhh i see. So that explains why zilog isnt getting the jump in ping when he pings an address for an extended amount of time? Where as I do, which is giving me my lag?

At least your ping time isn't as bad as mine - online games are totally out!

I've been running speed tests here

    http://www.broadbandreports.com/tools

and i'm getting really bad results - in fairness the weathers awful which may effect my wireless signal - but i'm barely over dialup sppeeds on my downlaod rate??

how do other people fair using the tests above and are the any irish/uk sites with the same range of tests that maybe will yield better results for me (assuming the distance fo the tests is affecting results?

Thing about the weather .. it seems to be only IOLBB being affected, no problems with eircom from people I think.

I'm getting the 200+ ping aswell every few minutes and it is very annoying for someone who spends about 70% of their time online.

Yet again IOL show their ****ness, can't wait to switch to eircom.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,388 ✭✭✭Cina

I'm still getting these ridiculous ping problems, and now it appears to be even bloody worse than it was before. Is anyone else ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,368 ✭✭✭-ADREN-

Ive moved from IOL now, so thats that. I'm back on my 33.6 modem for the time being while we change to Eircom.
