Reports of Lying snow at Kells

    www.nra.ie

Weathercheck - could you please stop sensationalising and relax thanks.

    From the NRA site:
    Date Sat, Nov 20
    Time (24hr) 08:04
    Air Temp 1.0° C.
    33.8 ° F.
    Humidity 95%
    Avg Windspeed 6.0 mph
    Wind direction Easterly (110º)
    Road Surface Temp 0.3° C.
    32.5 ° F.
    Road State Wet
    Precipitation Light rainfall

There probably was snow lying there but it's raining now, hardly anything to get excited about and certainly not anything of any significance.
As I've said several times now, it's rain preceded by a little sleet and snow, not a blizzard, white out drifts of anything like that

    except maybe for centipedes...

raining here in wicklow by the way.

Thats ok weathercheck-no hard feelings :)

If its any consolation I keft my folks up in january 1982 here all night for 3 nights for a blizzard that lasted 3 days and dumped about two to three feet of snow here in Arklow with drifts 15 to 20 feet high.
The roads were closed and we were cut off for a couple of days and had no electricity. The people up the hills just a few miles away were marooned for a week or more and had food parcels dropped by helicopter.
Up near croghan mountain about 6 miles from where I live and about 1500 feet to 2000ft above sea level the drifts reached to the tops of the trees and thats 30 feet or more.
I was about 10 at the time and remember going down the yard with my sister at night and getting stook waist deep in the stuff and I was tall as a young lad.

Our car completely disappeared under the drifts and you could walk across the fields as the snow completely covered over the hedges.

The best bit was I got ten days off school.
And we are at sea level! Now that was a snowstorm.
Even after the mild weather and rain returned the drifts were in the fields and at the road sides for up to a forthnight later.

    Wet and cool.

Meanwhile "ah the winter of 82!" even here in Waterford City the snow was on the ground for a week I remember how dirty it was by the thaw. No days off school though! :(

IIRC what happened in 1982 was a feed of intensely cold easterly's meeting up with a vigourous atlantic weather system with a large area of high pressure over scandanavia causing the feed.
It was a battle between a warm system and a cold feed and with fronts in there as you know that means a lot of precipitation.
The cold feed won out turned the rain to snow.
It actually started as rain on the south coast and places as far north as Rosslare initially reported rain and snow mixed.
It started as snow here though and the system got stuck over the Irish sea with the cold air feed.
There was even a report of a ship sinking in the irish sea with the weight of snow on board combined with the strong winds!
When it moved away to the north East a cold high pressure system built down which kept the country freezing by day and night for a week .

There is little comparison though between the computer models of today and what was available 22 years ago.The forcasters did say it would snow a lot at the time I remember but they were caught out by the extent of it.
Also it was in january when the air over central , easten Europe and Siberia feeding the system would have been much colder than in november.

I guess the moral of the story is, if you want significant snow, you want a high pressure in the right part of scandanavia.
East winds basically not North ones, they are good for Scotland but no good for the south of England or most of Ireland if you are a snow lover that is :D

Now when I've time I'll move this little chat over to the other thread :)
