Drove to Cork this morning at 6am

car thermometer reading -3c for much of the journey...
Slip sliding away could have been the theme tune as the roads were a sheet of white frost.
I nearly hit the ditch several times and had to slow to 20 mph.

On the way back tonight the gritting machines were out

Curiously as I was driving home-just 2 miles over the road car reads -2c
1 mile over the road 0c
    here car reads +2c

    Davis reads 1.7c

Temp stuttering but still heading downwards,

    -3.3C, lowest of Winter

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,264 ✭✭✭highdef

According to the car thermometer (which is actually very accurate), the temp was -1.0 driving throught the Phoenix Park at around 22:50 with fog beginning to make it's appearance in places. -1 is the lowest temp I've seen the car display in nearly 2 years of ownership. Driving on the M50 past the airport 15 mins earlier, the temp was showing 0.5 which would be about right as temp at Dublin airport at the time was 0c.

Will be driving home around 4am - I reckon the park will be seriously cold by then - possibly the coldest night in Dublin of the season, me thinks

Just back from the pub and its really cold out, not looking forward to my 5am start to cork..im in wicklow...

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,264 ✭✭✭highdef

Hmmm, temp appears to be rising now. What's the story with that. 2c at Dublin airport now. Sky is still clear but it has got a little misty. The sky over the city has that orange glow you get with haze and mist.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Currently -4c, everything frozen. Quite a hoar frost too, I can see a big bank of fog over the NW of the town, huge orange glow of street lights. Even the eircom phone lines are white with the frost. Looks like getting colder too with clear skies overhead. A -6 or a -7 would not surprise me tonight... getting towards the coldest night of the winter so far which stands at -5.3c.

According to your site you were -3.5c at 730am

I'll bet the lake was frozen over this morning ? That should be enough for inch thick ice?

Meanwhile 15 miles down the road at the same time, it was at its lowest at a comparatively mild -0.8c

    Cloudy here

I notice Birr is -6c and Kilkenny -5c this morning at 9am

Baltinglass NRA is reporting -6.1c also at that time whilst Dublin is even balmier than me at +3c

I wonder what the mins there were ?
