Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What makes you happy?

I've just had a sudden thought - what makes people happy?

For me it's standing on a stage, microphone in hand (maybe even a guitar strapped on) and performing infront of a crowd of people who like to hear the kind of music you're playing/making. The best buzz in the world!

The best time of my life was when I had a band - we used to have the best of craic just practicing! None of us could play (most would argue we still can't), but that didn't matter a bit! Recently, we've gotten back together cause the Rhythm Guitarist's 21st is happening in a couple of weeks and we're gonna do a few tunes for old time's sake. I'm really looking forward to it! biggrin.gif

Anyway - what does it for you?

    All the best,

    Dav

    happiness eh?
all terribly relative but a computer game with lots of statistics in it, something like CM3 does it for me.
    a good book.
company of people I like or love.
a good, bad or indifferent film, as long as I get to see it in the cinema.
    pasta.

    Love - above all else.

In the background there's always good food, good friends, good conversation, socialising, art & literature... it's quite a broad, sweeping question thar, Dav! - if you were asking "what does it for you above all else" then that's easy... love.

Being with people I love, in general.

The single most happy/satisfied I ever felt in my life was when I helped a good friend through a really hard time and got him back on his feet. The sense of achievement from knowing that you've affected someone elses life in a positive way like that leaves you with a glow for weeks.

What makes me happy? In no particular order...

Playing with my kids, watching them sleep, enjoying their triumphs (like when Tristan started pedaling his trike smile.gif

Writing and then putting it away for two weeks, and then reading what I wrote and actually STILL LIKING IT...

    cats!

That my ferret came home after vanishing for 24 hours!

A REALLY good book. The ending doesn't matter if it's a good book, it makes me happy.

    One word...s'mores!

When someone I care about is happy.

a kind word, either from me to someone else or vice versa.

    Music!

    friends!

    (yum!)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 141 ✭✭pepperkin

Yes, Kaiser, s'mores are a snack. A wonderful, yummy snack. smile.gif

To make s'mores. You'll need the following ingredients....

any number of good, fun friends
a campfire or some sort of safe flame (unsafe meaning charcoal, lamp oil, anything that causes toxic fumes.)
    a bag of marshmallows
a box of honey or cinnamon graham crackers
lots of chocolate bars, any brand
    add alcohol if desired.

roast your marshmallow to your preference. Then make a sandwich with....2 crackers, a chunk of chocolate, and your hot toasty marshmallow. Squish together and feast! (marshmallow and chocolate go INside the crackers, *grins* smile.gif

Let me know if you like them!

It's my birthday today, that makes me v happy, mmmmmmmm cake.

    Happiest above all is probably
when I go home and see my baby
sisters ( well they were babies
when I left home anyway )and of
course the rest of my family.

Yip time with family would have to be it.

Although standing before an audience after
performing for them for a couple of hours
and hearing them applaud you, be it for acting in my case or Singin/Playing in your case Dav, came a very close second smile.gif

You never expect the Beefy Inquisition !!!

My faith, my books, good movies late on Saturday nights at the cinema, being in love, chocolate, sunshine, singing, my best friend, getting loads of post, seeing hard work pay off, seeing my brother happy, lunch in St Stephen's Green in scorching weather, my patched cords, that stretched out feeling after the gym, good burps, the prospect of moving out in 4 months, kids, making friends laugh, finding £5 in my jacket that I forgot about. biggrin.gif [In this space used to be what we are all thinking about for getting happy, but I've edited it out now.]

*I can relate to the applause thing. But not much these days.*

Actually posting this has made me feel quite happy. tongue.gif

Give me back my towel. I'll sue.

Kharn you got the right idea there mate.
Im practicing hard so someday I can have a crack at maybe being able to play guitar decently for an audience in a band maybe, but the awfully discouraging thing is I cant sing.

    Still tho.
Simply playing the guitar, gain up full, power chords a plenty, pi$sing everybody in the neighbourhood off. THAT is fun!! smile.gif
Other pasttimes fall into a different category of 'happy'.

Happiness is caused by psychedelic hallucinogens acting in hydrophobic pockets in critical brain protein to promote and sustain superposition, 'expanding' consciousness.

i don't think it was a matter of faith Canaboid. i just made what i thought was a rational bet and lost.

but my sense of righteousness was dented.

of course, my sense of righteousness is so disgustingly overblown, that overall, this dent counts for very little.

seeing a film you know will be a classic at the cinema for tha first time.

Writing. I love it, its a buzz that nothing else can compete with.

Going out with your friends, and everything just falls into place for you. Your funny, your popular, the girls love you. It may seem like drunkeness, but its not, its just happiness.

(at the risk of sounding like the opening line of a song) well, if I ever feel down, I just remember these things:

I'm young, healthy, getting a good college education, have friends that i respect and trust, have loved (and lost, heh), live in a country where i'm free to say and think what I want, have a pretty decent part time job and I know where my next meal is coming from.

hmm...well other than that; what makes me happy?,

    heeheehee
    I'd forgotten about this thread.

You may have noticed I mentioned a gig I was gonna be playing - well it was last weekend and it was terible, but I loved it! The sound quality was rubbish, the lead guitar player's guitar went out of tune for no reason right before we started and there was feedback everywhere. But, the pub was jammed with some of my best friends (many who hadn't seen me play before) and it was a resounding sucess!

I'll try and get some shots scanned (there's one crazy one of me in particular) and show you!

I've thought about other "make's me happy stuff" and there are plenty - kickin' back with the mates and getting intoxicated biggrin.gif (We did quite a bit of that this weekend too). Also, Frodo - gotta agree. Sex is indeed great!!! smile.gif

In no particular order, except for the first. That's the most important:

    Having peace of mind
    Family
    Friendship
    Travelling
    Good Books
Sitting in parked cars, up the mountains, on rainy days (because I'm warm).
    Elisabeth smile.gif
    The mountains
    Climbing the mountains
    More mountains
Climbing cliffs on the side of mountains
Humanities board being nice to each other for once.
    Elisabeth smile.gif
    Animals
    Get fuzzy
    Good movies
    Swimming
    Elisabeth up the mountains smile.gif

    And ...

The fact that one day....I will die and leave this **** hole of a life...and the chance that any ****ers that made my passage through this life tough will die a slow slow painful death....naw only messin....the usual stuff

    - Fallin out of bed at 12pm sunday morning after a deadly night out to be greeted by the smell of roasting beef and spuds...

    - Making people laugh.......people usually laugh at me though

-Laughing at people (e.g. Castor and shinji).

-thinking about people who i miss and knowing that they are probably thinking about me and missing me.

-A nice cold bottle of cider from the cooler after a day of arsing about in the sun.

-Passing exams that loads of other people failed.

-Seeing people come out and go 'that was simple'....and then they fail....

-Prooving people wrong especially where it involves me winning money.

-Having money to buy things i want.

-The expectation of going on a really good holiday (it usually isn't as good as you hope).

-spouting ****e makes me happy (see above post).

i'm sure there's loads of other stuff too i can't think of but what the hey.

    Nothing much makes me happy.

I love being around my friends, having a good laugh and a drink, going out on the weekends with the girls (and a few lads - 80% of my friends are girls... they are more reliable, and my best friend is also a girl)

I dont know what makes me happy, but I do know one thing that would make me happy...

For the last two years my mother has been in a coma, which had been induced on her due to alcohol problems... It is, according the various hospitals she has been submitted to, permanant (Or at least long term) and every day is a pain for me...

If I could have just have one minute with her, without her in this comatose, to have just a brief chat and a hug, I'd be happy and grateful, but it's doubtful she'll ever wake up frown.gif

I live with my father and sister now, with my head in the clouds. The family is falling apart, and my education is suffering.

My mother is now in WestMeath Hospital, where we visit her every fortnight.
How do you think I felt on Mothers Day?

Anyway, I have said it before, I'll say it once more...

There are people all over the planet, with problems far worse than this, so accept your lot and dont question it...

Some people often wonder why I get so uptight, moody and arrogant from time to time... Here's my reason, on a cursed silver plate.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

    That's tough man. frown.gif

I watched my Dad die in hospital which was indirectly related to his alcoholism, so I know where you're coming from.

I'd give anything to be able to have a chat with him now, even to have been there when he died (he was in hospital in Galway and I was at home in Castlebar that day), but I know that's not gonna happen.

However, after 5 years, it gets easier to accept. Not much comfort now I know, but something to keep in mind...

Be cool - try and get through school - I just about managed it (should've done at least 3 times better in my LC), but I got to college where I met new people and had new friends to talk to which makes stuff much easier to cope with! My college friends are without doubt the best I have and they will be for a long time to come.

Anyway - spend as much time as you can with yer mates - they'll sort ya out!

    All the best,

    Dav
