You can take them now that the EU Pets Passport scheme is in effect, but you'll have to get your skates on as you'll need to get everything sorted at least 6 months before your departure. Actually it's slightly longer than that as you have to get the rabies jabs done *and* the blood test results returned before the 6 month waiting period kicks in.

See http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/index.jsp?file=pets/index.xml for more details. The information on www.oasis.gov.ie is outdated. I've tried emailing them regarding this but have got no reply.

Oh yes, and you'll have to find a vet that is au-fait with the regulations or else you'll be teaching them what to do! I did the same thing in reverse 4 years ago when moving here form Holland via the UK which had it's own scheme then on which the EU scheme is based.

    cheers-,
oasis told me nothing and any mails i sent where returned undeliverable. i rang charlemont street vets last night and they gave me the same info as you. i'm traveling in 3 months for 3 months so they told me they can issue the passport after the initial blood tests come back but it wont be valid for 6 months.
this is cool as spain will allow me to bring the dog in on the strength of the initial tests and i should have no bother then returning then with the valid passport.

Thanks for the info & the link to here

No problem :) I've managed to contact oasis.gov.ie, and they've promised to update the information there.

One or two other things ...

The blood tests can take quite a while to come back, depending on which lab they send the samples to. Ours (which went to Brussels) took two weeks if I remember correctly.

Also there's a requirement for the animal to be treated for ticks (which is just the normal Advantage anti-flea/tick treatment or something similar) within a 24 to 48 hour window before departure. This needs to be done by a registered vet who then needs to stamp the passport to certify that it's been done. Depending on your travel plans this can be a real PITA.

There's also some much more detailed information to be found on the UK's DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) website under http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/PETS/index.htm including some handy checklists.

    Good luck!
