Ok I'll tell you the basics of what I know.

First, get your mod chip. (xecuter 3 is what I am using)
Install your mod chip. (Using diagrams etc. read up on this)
You will have a new bios on this modchip, but it won't be too useful.
You will have to flash a new bios onto your mod chip in order to play emulators.
Something like X3 bios will do, although there are many.
To flash the bios, copy it to a cd (read up on this, as there are more things to do)

You will now have your modded xbox ready to go.
You will have to set up an FTP connection to your Xbox in order to transfer files (read)
The first thing you will want it a dashboard (menu) to control the applications etc.
Something like EVO-X will do, this will have to be copied first (read)
Now, you can ftp the applications you want into the apps folder on your xbox.

There is tons more you can do, but thats the basics.

Check out the tutorials on http://www.xbox-scene.com/tutorials.php to learn about each step.

http://modchipsireland.com/ will supply the chip and fit it. I highly reccomend them
http://www.kanection.co.uk/ will supply just the chip, a solderless one is pretty easy to install, and if you cant install a solderless one you definitley wont be able to install the solder ones. If you want to play it safe go with Mod Chips Ireland.

Once you have it chipped http://www.xbox-scene.com/ will tell you how to backup games etc.
