I've never been impressed with Metallica's take on Whiskey In The Jar...

But Tom Jones singing Black Betty took years off my life.

Husker Du, really different sounding song the original

Oh right, Husker Du are one of those bands I've heard of but never heard.

RATM's covers are generally pretty damn good.
How I Could Just Kill A Man, In My Eyes, Kick Out The Jams and Microphone Fiend are the only ones ive heard the originals of and they are excellent. Kick out the jams is great live, but boringly slow in the studio.

I Fought the Law - The Clash (originally by the Bobby Fuller Four)

    A truly classic cover

avril lavigne doing Fuel by metallica was worse than chop suey...its a **** song anyway but why flog a dead horse

also Rory Gallaghers cover of pistol slapper blue's is definitely worth a mention...didnt like "messin with the kid" et al

Ok i'm gonna start off with the bad cos there's so f*cking many of them.

Orgy - Blue Monday (New Order), an absolute disgrace!
Megadeth - Paranoid (Black Sabbath). Mustaine sounded bloody terrible
Avril Lavigne - Fuel (Metallica). Lars should have sued her, not napster users!
Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love (Soft Cell) - I usually like his covers, but he killed that!
David Bowie and Annie Lennox - Under Pressure (Queen/Bowie) - At the Freddie tribute, Bowie's voice wasn't up to full performance, and Annie Lennox had no business there i felt.
Therapy? - Isolation (Joy Division) - Weird, disjointed cover with an even weirder video, and i'm not referring to the black and white promo video either.
New Order - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division) - If you ever heard them do this live, you'd know what i mean, sad thing is, it was 3/4 members of the original band!

I'll stop there or i'll rant forever.

    Good
U2 - Dancing Barefoot (Patti Smith), Dark enough song, i felt U2 did it justice.
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Leadbelly), One of the few songs i liked on Unplugged
Megadeth - No More Mr Nice Guy (Alice Cooper), I actually preferred this over the original. One of the few Megadeth covers i liked. Not a bad movie either.
Rolling Stones - Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan), I like this just for sheer irony.

    Nero

    Good:
Opeth - Circle Of The Tyrants (celtic frost cover)
Megadeth - Anarchy In The UK (sex pistols cover)
Arch Enemy - Aces High (Iron Maiden cover)
Cradle Of Filth - For All Those Who Died (sabbat cover)
Berzerker - Corporal Jigsaw Quandary (Carcass)

    The Bad
Anything by Avril Lavagne or Ronan Keating
