Man Utd have the funds availible if Fergie really thinks its important enough to win the title.

While a new keeper would be nice, I figure what Fergie will buy now is a new attacking midfielder, a winger, or ronaldinho style player, especially with Giggs injury now.

how long is giggs out for?

A month apparently, but knowing Giggs it probably means at least two, if not more.

I dont think united will sign a new keeper until the summer. More than likely Howard will be given another chance. I thout he did well when he had a settled defence in front of him, in fact he was named in the premiership top team last season.

I can't see us signing anyone in the window but come summer I can see a clearout of three or four players and the will have be replaced.

Howard should be given another chance.

I'd like to compare Cech and Howard. Right now Cech is the flavour of the day. Everyone loves him. The best keeper in the EPL.

Cast your mind back to this time 12 months ago. Everyone loves the new yank, United are riding top of the league. Then Rio goes into exile. Howard becomes Miss Butterfingers. What would happen to Cech if Terry broke a leg or something?

Howard was great with a solid defense in front of him. Just look at his stats with/without Rio.

Has Howard fallen out with Ferguson ?
He was extremely good last season ,then made a few errors and was dropped .
Against Tottenham he wasnt even on the bench.
I sense he had an argument with Ferguson.

i thought howard was very good when he first arrived.

but, if he can only perform when he has a solid defence infront of him thats not a good sign.

The reason his stats are better with rio is, is probaly due to the fact that Rio cut down on the chances that were created, thus limiting his chances to make a mistake.

i think once a keeper loses his confidence its very hard to get back. Howard has been given a few chances already this season and has made too many mistakes.

Being a 'pool fan i look at dudek and kirkland and cant ever see them being good enough to be regular starters.

Howard is not well, apparantly he has Tirrets syndrome (spelling??) where you randomly start talking vulgar. Fergie is only keeping on the books to keep the Yanks / Nike happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

They knew that before they signed him!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 801 ✭✭✭puntosporting

there is a lot more to torrets syndrome than shouting obsenitys its a terrible affliction some people cant control there body at all!
If howard suffers this and its is getting worse than he can only be a liability between the posts!

No he has it under control as far as I know but God help him if it is not the case...

While I always thought Howard was a good solid keeper, I never thought he was outstanding in any way. He is a good stop gap No.1, and much more than just a second choice keeper. But a team with ambitions like United need a stronger No.1. I dont think he has a presence, or can command the box (like the man who they are still trying to replace). That is what you need in a keeper if you have ambitions like United.

Keepers id consider if i where looking would be given, van der sar and of course robinson but are any decent keepers available?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭Jivin Turkey

Well, while I mightnt say they are "available", but I wouldnt class Given and Van Der Sar as "unavailable", even Niemi?

we dont need another keeper, i firmly believe howard is one of the best in the world and was harshly treated.

it's only fair carroll is dropped now as he's made a few big blunders now recently. he's a good backup keeper and this long run could be invaluable in terms of experience but carroll is not world class and will always be 2nd choice imo. his organisation of the defence is superb, it's the one thing he has an advantage over howard with. notice how there hasn't been any fvck ups with silvestre etc letting each other go for the ball and in the end nobody getting it only the opposition.

however one on one in terms of goalkeeping ability howard wins hands down imo. he's extremely agile and fit, carroll always has a statue look about him and is nowhere near as flexible as howard. howard also has a good record in penalty shoot-outs if that counts at all. plus he's more experienced at international level. utd would be fools to freeze him out or sell him, he's a great keeper in the making. (lets not forget he's only 25 which for a keeper is young)

In all fairness, Howard never made a mistake as Carroll's two against Lyon and Spurs this season. He failed to get the ball away from goal against Lyon and they got a goal but I would feel sympathy with him over that because the ball bounced in front of him. Howard will start against Exeter and he will start the next Premiership match after that. Howard has served his punishment, now its Carroll's turn.

I still think we need a top, top class goalkeeper. Carroll will be gone in the summer (out of contract?)

the last decent keeper utd had was schmicheal, and he has probably been in the top three keepers seen in the premiership since it started.

after that, i think furgie decided to check out clown college for replacements.
but never made it past the novice clown section...

a great keeper is worth so much in a game. i mean, look at west ham when they went down. all those players, who could probably make up the england team now, and who was in goal.
    david james.
    i say no more!

What about Robert Green he is a good keeper at a crap club?

exactly, thats what i said, in his defence the ball bounced in front of him and many a keeper would struggle to hold onto it. plus if the defence had of been on it's toes it would have been cleared and that whole incident would be forgotten.

despite that error howard is one of the best when it comes to holding onto low, drilled shots, something ive never seen any keeper so comfortable with. ok he might make the odd blunder but he's only human, even the great dane was prone to errors, barnsley anyone? howard has to get a second chance, ffs he proved what he can do last year, he didnt become a clown and butterfingers overnight!

Not too sure of him! have watched him a few times and he was dodgy to say the least!! cant remember the games but he let it slip through his hands at least twice-three times this season!

Boro goalkeeper....Schwarzer who is one of the best in the PL has already some out and said that Boro will prob cash in on him this month because he is on a free in the summer and doesnt look like signing a new contract.....Fergie likes him and has been linked to him every season for the last 3......otherwise they will wait till the summer and get him or Van Der Sar on a free.....

i have to admit i was a big fan of howard's but since he was dropped i have seen him a handful of times and his confidence is completely gone. the league cup game against arsenal comes to mind.

i dont really rate van der sar, how old is he anyway? surely utd need a keeper that will last a few years and not have the same problem three years down the road.

i think given is perfect, or niemi but will these clubs sell? they would cost a lot of money!

also a friend of mine said last night that with the skill of the players these days and the new balls, finding the perfect keeper is too hard! keepers aint what the used to be!

giggs and van nistelrooy recovering well, fergies says howard starts next two games.

MASSIVE game for howard away to chelsea, thats his chance to claim back 1st choice spot.

it will probably be a case of damage limitaion for utd away to chelsea with the reserves playing, howard will be tested to the extreme with a weakened defence in front of him.

this could be the biggest game he'll ever play.

In the Carling Cup no less! :p

yeah, although its a mickey mouse comp you can guarantee should howard make a big blunder like carroll he'll be kicked out eventually because of it.

howard has to prove himself again in fergie's eyes so theres huge pressure on him for that chelsea game away where he's gonna have his work cut out. should he perform heroics we'll probably see him back in the premiership.

Everygame is massive according to you seamon :D

Howard is a good keeper but he is no way in the status of "world class", id I think many keepers in the premiership are way ahead of him in terms of quality.

I was gutted when Robinson left for spurs, he would be a very welcome addition to the arsenal camp right now. The same goes for Given, he is not going to win anything with newcastle and he is not getting any younger so id predict a move in the summer, hopefully to highbury!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,479 ✭✭✭wheres me jumpa

yeah its a big one for howard, if he messes up i think utd will go for a goalkeeper in the transfer window. or maybe just take andy goram on loan til the end of the season!

have Arsenal got £30 million , because thats the price Souness has quoted for Given .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Howard, if you think back quite some time, a whole year, was considered by many to be one, if not the best keeper in the premiership.
The way you know this is cause he won some crappy award or something :)

IMO Given is too short to be a really top class keeper which is a pity because he has everything else.

I don't think his height affects him too much . He is rarely chipped , and can reach shots going anywhere . Iker Casilias isn't particulary big for a keeper either , but he's still one of if not the best keeper in the World .(its between him and Buffon for me) You probably prefer the type of keeper Van Der Sar , Scwhazer and Howard are to a smaller more agile keeper

30 million my ass. He is not wroth that but if a serious offer of 10-12 million came his way i dont think he could refuse. When is his contrat up anyway. Ill have a whisper in Mr Wenger's ear too about him

Newcastle aren't a poor club by any stretch of the imagination and I think a 10-12 bid would be rejected fairly lively . Realisticly I think he would go for somehwhere between £16 million-£18 million

Oh and 2007 is when his contact ends .

Keepers dont cost that much, if Given wanted to go, and a bid of 12 mil came along i doubt it'd be refused.

If Given handed in a transfer request there is no doubt he'd be gone . But top class keepers can be pricey , especially when the player is moving from one loaded club to another . He may not be in Buffon's class but look how much Parma got for him in an albeit very inflated transfer market .
