Isn't it wonderful how the term "file sharing" has become synonymous with piracy...

i dont know exactly what you mean good or evil?
i file share with a few guys in america
mostly wwf wrestling and tv shows that i cant wait for .
but theres so much porno on these sites . and very easy to access.
im not saying i dont like it.
we all need our share of porno.
    but the kids teens etc
can get it in 2 clicks
    torrent sites etc..
the other thing is some of the files people download . are mis labeled
you think your getting the simpsons
turns out to be the neigbours wife and a few of the lads from the pub on a camcorder.

I think it depends entirely on the person. In my case, I think downloading music and keeping it without paying for it is dishonourable. You like a bands music and you listen to it, they really ought to get paid for enhancing your life. I don't like people who have vast archives of music and claim to like bands but they've stolen the music from the band. That's just wrong, damn wrong. In the same way if you like double deckers, the good people at Cadbury ought to be paid for providing you with the chocolate, I don't view taking music any differently.

I have downloaded music before but purely for research. If I download something I turn out to like, I'll buy the CD. If I don't like it I get rid of the files and I don't blow €20 on a CD I haven't heard (which appears to be how the retailers would like things to be).

He didn't say it was legal. Are you saying that anyone who downloads copyrighted music is a muppet?

Dude, 95% of what you paid for that CD doesn't go to the band.
10% is manufacturing/distribution the rest goes to the suits.

Cop onto yourself. The question wasn't is it legal or not, it was is it a good thing or and evil thing. I believe my answer was tailored to the question. Keep your flaming to yourself next time and good luck with the audition.

There is no facility for renting music in the same way there is for renting a DVD, therefore if you are looking to use an example at least try and make sure it is relevant. You are expected to pay for music you've never heard and, when you buy as much music as I do, sometimes pay for CD's by bands you've never heard before. I don't think there is anything wrong in hearing music before I buy it. Some of the internet vendors, eg Amazon, CD Universe etc, provide short samples of each song of an album, which is great and is exactly what HMV and the like ought to do but don't.

I am very well aware of the workings of the industry and I'd rather a band who provide me with good music get at least 5% rather than nothing at all. Nothing at all means no more music and, if it's aband you like, is surely a bad thing?

u asked if it was good r bad ?
it aint good to nobody but yourself.
its ok , if and i doubht ....
youre getting the music from the official source

most of us on here do it, or did it at some stage.

theres no real other answer to your question.

Let me provide you with an example. The last time I downloaded music illegally was when I had heard quite a bit about Opeth, but never actually heard their music. I downloaded one song, Blackwater Park, illegally because I could not find any samples through legitimate sources and that was enough for me to decide to buy the Blackwater Park album. Therefore, it was good for me, I got some great music. It was good for the band, they got their 5% and it was good for the suits, they got their 95%. If I hadn't been able to hear that song I more than likely would not have bought the CD. So from this example, I hope you'd agree, it can be a good thing for all concerned.

I hope this clears the confusion and signals an end to the unpleasantness.
