Replacing old wooden windows and doors

I want to replace the windows and the front door to my terraced house in Dublin. I'm not particularly fond of uPVC, but I'm also not sure if I can justify the price of timber. The windows are 6 panes above 6 and the PVC versions of this (with the dividing bars between the glass) tends to look pretty naff. Has anyone got similar work done, or does anyone have any tips/recommendations?

With the current weather, I want to get this done ASAP..
