Looks regrettably like Minister Dempsey did'nt hear ye at the meeting when ye expressed IOFFL's position on Satellite.

6 more communities are now lumbered with Satellite :(

Incidentally for those not fimiliar with the geography, Ballyneety Co. Limerick is 5.2Km from, and has LOS to the ESB fibre connection to the Limerick MAN at Kilonan

Satellite is a Third world solution to a First world problem

Unfortunately if thats what a community wants or asks for thats what they get :(

or more importantly if the local WISP convinces them that thats what they need...........

If the WISP was to bring the network back to ESBT Kilonan then they would have had additional charges for accessing the tower (incl. riggers) as well as the ESBT backhaul charges

Unfortunately, if that's what the DCMNR pays grants for.

Let us not blame the naivety/gullibility of the community or the business endeavour of a satellite provider for the stupidity of the DCMNR people.

It'll be interesting to find out how many satellite "broadband" projects have to date been grant-aided by the gov. And the amount of money that has been spent on those grants. Anybody up for doing the count?

I am just back from the launch today, and, if the Minister and his officials did'nt hear ye then, he certainly heard it today, and was left under no illusions about Satellite "Broadband", thanks to John's taking the opportunity afforded him to outline the IOFFL position.

Take a bow John, you certainly decimated the Satellite lobby when they tried to defend their "solution of last resort"

    You the man

Did a trawl through the DMNCR press releases and this is what I came up with
Total grant aid approved to date = €302,001.55
Total no. of projects approved to date = 22 ? Can only find Press releases referring to 17

    Eircom DSL = 2
    Last Mile Wireless = 4
    Kinvara GDS Wireless = 1
    Ildana Satellite = 10

There must be many other grant aided satellite "broadband" installations with the department of education (for secondary schools) and with Eamon O Cuiv, Minister for the Gaeltacht?

Did the SWRA/Broadband (Kerry) recieve funding for about 14 Satellite installations (Bantry, Dingle, etc) again mostly through Ildana Teoranta.
