Headed out this evening to see if there were any more snipe showing up.
I brought the shotgun just in case and sure enough at the very start of my snipe ground I put up a snipe and the springer but up another at the same time.

I fired at the one I put up and knocked him at 30 yards. I couldn't figure out where about he dropped and after 20 mins with the springer searching through heather there was no sign of him. I had a feeling he dropped further out but still couldn't see anything.

I moved on to see if anything else was about. Another 3 was put up but no shots were fired as I already had one in the bag so don't want to shoot every bird that is coming in.

On the way back the springer found the snipe in a drain behind where we were looking so happy days. Season is going well so far and hope it continues. Dog is getting stronger and stronger and after changing his food to Brilly's he is a different dog!

Father dropped this one Thursday just before 6pm. Rang me on the way home, and was well chuffed with himself. The best he has taken so far this year, and only a month into it.

Not his best or biggest, but still a good size.

I decided to head out earlier for an hour or two to see what was moving around.
With only two and a half weeks until the 1st I am trying to get every minute I can. I didn't get to do much work with the springer during the summer so trying to get him fitter for the four days of solid hunting coming up shortly.

I decided to head to a different area this time to see if any snipe have decided to come in. I was hopeful with the colder and wetter weather that the area might be starting to fill up.

Before hitting the boggy area I hit the fields around it which haven't been touched in years. There is a lot of cover and it usually holds a few pheasants but so far I have seen nothing.

Started hunting up the right hand side of it, working the ditches, drains and grass. Dog is quartering well and picking up scents but nothing stirring. I then noticed a pheasant coming into land over in the far corner, about 350 yards away so I know I will finally get some pheasant scent up the dogs nose.
Worked up to where I saw him land and sure enough the dog starts to get very excited and starts to work harder. Down he went into a drain and up comes a nice pheasant. It seemed big enough but the tail wasn't that long.

Carried on to my snipe ground and the first patch we try results in a snipe. It was a young snipe but none the less the dog worked great. That's all I saw so headed back for home.

Was a nice day to be out even with the rain.

    Just back in.
More snipe starting to come in.

Had a bad outing with the springer. He seemed to do the complete opposite of what I wanted him to do. Talking about testing your patience.

Still managed to bag these two.

First of the season. Only my second morning out. Not getting nearly as much time as I'd like but it's always good to open the account anyway.
