I know someone posted a list(of 1.4L cars) a while ago but i cant find it. Just want to see how the different makes of factory standard cars compare to each other, acceleration wise.
I want something with a bit more bite. Am driving a 1.4 97 escort at the moment, but will have the 2 yrs no claims under my belt in march, so should be able to afford a 1.6.............round the 6-7k mark.

Im really bored in work btw, as u can see.

This may help, it's a list of some mid-range cars in a very good post by mayshine here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=200284&page=3

The order is the quickest to the slowest. Mayshine may have more results!

    Stilo 1.4 - 1010Kg, 70Kw = 69.3 Kw/tonne
    Corolla 1.4 - 1110Kg, 71Kw = 62.0 Kw/tonne
    Megane 1.4 - 1165kg, 72Kw = 61.1 Kw/tonne
    Civic 1.4 - 1125Kg, 66Kw = 58.7 Kw/tonne
    Clio 1.2 - 965kg, 55Kw = 57 Kw/tonne
    Astra 1.4 - 1178kg, 66Kw = 56.0 Kw/tonne
    Peugeot 307 - 1170, 65 Kw = 55.6 Kw/tonne
    Mazda 3 - 1180Kg, 62 Kw = 52.5 kw/tonne
    Focus - 1154kg, 55Kw = 47.7 Kw/tonne
    Leon 1.4 - 1161Kg, 55Kw = 47.4 Kw/tonne
    Octavia - 1230Kg, 55Kw = 44.7 Kw/tonne
    Golf 1.4 - 1319kg, 55Kw = 41.6 Kw/tonne

    DC.

You see it doesn't always work out well. Although the Clio has a very high power to weight ratio, the Punto wins hands down

Thanks lads, thats what i was looking for.
Had my eye on the Focus, but going by that the 1.4 would be as slow/fast as my escort. How's the 1.6 for performance?

@unkel: What site did you get those from?

Geez I would have thought the new 1.4 Focus would be a good bit faster than the 1.4 Escort(which uses a very dated 8valve engine)

The data from various sites, the graphs © unkel :)

I considered all cars up to 1449 cc available new today in Ireland in the classes supermini and small family hatchback. All are petrol

Where there was more than one version of a model, I tried to take the fastest i.e. the Skoda Fabia 1.4 is avialable with the 74KW version of the VAG engine, the Octavia isn't

This explains some of the results of VAG cars in the charts

Focus 14.1s, Escort 14.4s. Power to weight nearly identical

    New cars are fat :)

Mark my words: in about 5-10 years time, the most basic versions of superminis (Yaris, Micra, Fiesta, Corsa, etc) will have 100bhp

    Ok,

Here is an excel spreadsheet which lists all the data from carzone, its about 4-5 months old so some data might have changed, and there is some gaps but still it should give you the info you require

    Cars DB
