I have a 94 Seat Ibiza that I haven't driven in well over two years. The car is in reasonably good nick, only would need a number of mechanical things done to get it roadworthy and past an NCT (estimate around E500 of work, which to my mind is all the car is worth now anyway). However, since I'm driving a fairly new car would rather just get rid of it and perhaps make a few bob too. it's the same story with an old Ford Fiesta belonging to my parents. Both cars are just taking up space. Question: can you make money from scrapping a car or do you have to pay for the privilege?

    Jake

Most scrap yards charge by weight and some have a fixed charge for cars. You could try and sell them as-is but its often more trouble in the end. If you are near Galway I can collect the Ibiza....

Reply to interceptor - In Meath area if that's any use?

To the floor: what kind of rates to scrappage yards charge? You mentioned weight, what's typical for a small car?

expect topay 20 not the end of the world. the other option is if the car isnt urs and doesnt belong to anyone at that address push it onto the road and let the council pick it up for free. i think the councils do this as a service anyway. they will pick i up for very little.

This is the same as illegal dumping - the council usually only take it if has been burned out or is a hazard. I should have said that the cost of scrapping a car if it is weighed will be between 15 and 25 euros depending on the number of old batteries, mattresses and rusty bikes you cram into it. The last car I scrapped had eleven old batteries in it...

I'll pass on the offer to collect it in Meath, but I saw a '94 1.0 Ibiza with NCT for €1,000 at my local Seat dealer recently so maybe you should reconsider dumping it?

theyl actually drag it off for u for 25 i think. i know soth dublin county council offer this service to all residents here.

if its abandoned in other words the person who is the regd owner of it doesnt live there they drag it off for free and never persue them for anything. ive had 2 cars taken this way . just leave em on the road and give em a ring

    Heres what id do:

Change the ownership forms to your local tinkers name.
    Drive it into a field.
Geh horribly drunk and have a good joy-ride around the place (its the only time youll get a chance) until you end up crashing into something
When it can no longer drive, get out, remove the plates.
Walk home. Problem solved. Any questions?

I like, I like... Theres plenty of fields you could do that say around Geashill and Clonacadoo in the Midlands but then again this is Ireland you can find fields practically anywhere.
