Need to re-install NTL on WinXP

I just upgraded from Win98 to XP Home yesterday but when I plugged my NTL cable modem back into the computer it could only get what it described as a 'limited connection' or else it couldn't get an I.P. address at all. Do I need some specific DNS settings or something along those lines so the modem knows who to get the I.P. address from? I tried calling the support number I was given by NTL, it turned out to be Esat/IOL's support line. They said that for some reason NTL keep giving out their support number. Anyone heard that before. Please help if you can - I've to write a best-man speech tomorrow and it will be very difficult if I don't have internet access!

That's what I expected to happen but it just didn't work for me. Are there any WinXP settings that could be interfering with it?

Have you powered off/on the ntl modem?
I think it stores the mac address of your network card (though that wouldn't change when the OS did because it's a hardware address not software; no harm in a reset though).

At the command prompt type: ipconfig /renew to ask the DHCP server (the modem) for a new IP address. (I could be off on this because I have a router between my computer and the ntl modem and it is a DHCP server).

    ntl FAQ is at: http://www.ntl.com/locales/ie/en/athome/internet_faqs_technical.html#ip
It lists a 'dedicated feedback address' at the end: cablemodemhelp@ntlworld.ie

There is a very extensive site about ntl cable modems at:
    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/index.html
This page deals with IP addresses:
    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/ipaddr.html

Hopefully you get it sorted in time for the speech.
I've only ever know the 1800-321-321 ntl number.

Thanks very much for the info - you'll get a mention in the speech if I get the modem working!
