Okay its a bit early for this thread but (Sorry Spurs fans) this is the match of the weekend.

Morientes is apparently guarenteed a run out but I kind of doubt he'd start.

Man Utd have Rooney and Saha back, Giggs should return and maybe Ferdinand.

    Wont bother predicting a score...

    2-1 Liverpool, Shush!

    Mike.

    3-1 liverpool

baros x2, hyypia and ronaldo all to score.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

I can see Morientes getting a start, play for about an hour, then coming off.

Better to play from the start than have to get into a game with 20 minutes left.

Apparently Giggs will be back, so that is a positive for United, he had been on good form before his injury.

Maybe Tim Howard will retain his place too, but I'd be worried about that.

Rooney and Saha both fit, will mean a five man midfield when Liverpool have the ball, then two up top when attacking.

I'll go for a narrow United win.

now honestly i think we can score 2/3 against them and i dont see them scoring at all.

With six clean sheets in a row wouldn't be too sure of that.

    I'll go for a 1-0 away win

by we do you mean them because i cant see them i mean we conceding 2/3 goals against them our defence is alright at the minute and their forward play has been poor this season

sorry i should have said that i can see liverpool winning this, cant see goals in that utd team morientes and baros off to a flyer i hope

Manchester United havent conceeded a goal in something like 8 games. Don't think the pool will score unless Morientes has a good debut. 1-0 to United.

i dont i hope they have stinkers myself, smith and rooney to do the business with a bit of luck 2:0 united

Yes United have kept a 'Clean Sheet' in their last 8 games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Oh well, aren't you clever big ears :)
Check the scores, did united concedd a goal? Nope, I dont remember anything :)

None the less, Liverpool won't score, Morientes won't play a full match, when was the last time he played a full match, in Monaco i'd say :)

Chelsea, the best attack record in the premiership, couldn't score on a second rate United defence.

Rio is gona be back, Liverpool might get a goal, defo not two.

Saha will score, I'm sure of it and I have a bet on it :)
Whether or not we win, well I guess I'm biased.

    p.s. Liverpool suck

SSSHHH Dont't tell the spurs fans,

This is still United biggest game of the season IMO. United dominated the Old Trafford tie earloer this season so I would expect a backlash from the pool. That said I expect United to win by the odd goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,316 ✭✭✭ButcherOfNog

Liverpool will win, if Alonso was fit we'd win it by at least 2 goals. Even so the pool midfield is better than utd's and with Baros and anyone else we're better up front that a utd without RVN. 2-1 to the pool.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,341 ✭✭✭✭Chucky the tree

liverpool have scored in every home game barring chelsea so i wouldnt be too sure about liverpool not scoring.

    i will go for 1-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭smemon

2-0 utd, we'll be too much for a liverpool side in transition (yes, still in transition).

our recent form is sensational (bar exeter) and we're unbeaten in 11 in the league, winning 8, drawing 3. we've a solid defence, sounder than liverpool's and a wealth of strikers all coming back fresh and ready for action -smith, saha and rooney.

liverpool are good, but are not a top 3 side. if they are to be a top 3 side, they need to beat manu at home, something that should be normal, not a once-off.

Your spot on. 6th Nov 2004
    Liverpool 0 Birmingham 1

I personally think that this will be quite a though game for utd. But the stage has to be set for Rooney to have a sensational return to merseyside.

United to win 2-1 with Scholes and Rooney to score for united after Gerrard puts liverpool into an early lead.

GAK are the team we played in the CL qualifier

And United have a name for Fair Weathers fans. :D I cannot believe a serious fan does not recognise a team they have played this season.

Back on topic. Easy 2-0 to United. Rooney and Ferdinand. United defender have great records against Liverpool. Are they still playing a zonal defence?

    Expected team for United
    Carroll
Neville(G if fit or else P)
    Rio
    Sylvestre
    Heinze
    Keano
    Scholes
    Ronaldo
    Rooney
    Smith
    Giggs(if sit or else Saha)

Who are the pool playing RHS of midfield. Hopefully one of the Spanish boys so Heinze can scare the sh!te out of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Maybe I'm forgetting something obvious and recent, but I think its a long long time since the team who scored first in a ManU-Liverpool game ended up losing (of course maybe this is the time it will happen)

I have serious doubts about how good Morientes is going to be, but I do see him playing well v ManU. He should start. Him and Baros will cause Rio and Silvestre a lot of problems - if they get decent service (a BIG IF).

I presume (coz I havent heard otherwise) Hyypia has recovered from the flu - or else Pool are in big trouble! Rooney has never scored against Liverpool, but I suppose thats another record waiting to be broken. Saha looks in good shape so could well cause the Liverpool CBs plenty of problems, if he gets good service.

Giggs is in terrific form, but I'd expect and hope Finnan can deal with him. Ronaldo is a big danger though, if he plays at his best.

Neville v Riise should be tough and even. From a Liverpool point of view I'd hope Neville might show a little lack of sharpness, and maybe miss the odd off the ball run by JAR. Heinze will obliterate Luis Garcia. Maybe LG can produce one moment of magic to justify his existence. Pleasegod Nunez wont get near the pitch at any time.

The centre midfield is critical. Evenly matched, I suppose Scholes is the joker in the pack. We know what we'll get from Gerrard, Hamann and Keane - if Scholes is quiet, Keane wont be able to cope on his own and Liverpool should have much the best of it. On the other hand if he's at the top of his game (and he looked v.good in his few mins v Chelsea) there's a strong possibility he could be the match winner. Also should mention that Roy Keane is very much due a goal.

    Prediction: score draw.

That may be so but it still took a free kick that never should have been given and a corner that never should have been given for them to score. They won't have any 'favourable' decisions like that at Anfield :)

I'll also go for a score draw ;)x2

Think I'll head up to the bookies at lunchtime and put a fiver on Rooney or Scholes to score first (haven't decieded which one yet) and United to win 1-2.

    1-2 to United - 15/2
First goalscorer - Rooney 11/2 (same as Morientes) or Scholes 8/1.

  • Registered Users Posts: 799 ✭✭✭dirkey_wynne

Yeah, I'd certainly swap Utd's midfield of Giggs, Scholes, Keane and Ronaldo for Nunez, Gerrard, Hamman and Kewell/Garcia.

Give me a break! Hamann is a water carrier at best. Nunez is atrocious. Non existent so far. Garcia is hot and cold, and Gerrard has only ever had one good game against the top teams - that being against Arsenal earlier this season.

<Edit> Ooops. Just realised I forgot Riise, so it's probably him in for Nunez and I realise Kewell is out so it'll be Garcia. Slightly stronger, but I still expect Riise to be quiet enough. The only thing being he does have a left foot to be scared of, as we've found out to our cost previously. I still think Utd midfield is far better though.

I reckon Quinton Fortune will play in midfield to help Keane out. He had a great game on Wednesday. Fletcher is to light for a big game like this. The United team I'm hoping to see out is...

    GK: Howard
RB: Gary Neville, CB: Ferdinand, CB: Silvestre, LB: Heinze
    DM: Keane, DM: Fortune
RW: Ronaldo, AM: Scholes, LW: Giggs/Rooney
    ST: Smith/Saha.

If Hyypia plays I hope Saha plays, Saha's lightning pace will roast Hyypia who isn't the quickest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 799 ✭✭✭dirkey_wynne

    Personally I'd go for

    Carroll

    G. Nev Rio Silv Heinze

    Ron Scholes Keano Giggs

    Rooney

    Saha/Smith

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,298 ✭✭✭laoisfan

    Liverpool 2 - 1 Man. Utd.

    Gerrald and Morientes for Liverpool
    Rooney for Man. Utd.

i would like united to lose this game because I felt very sorry for spurs. United should have lost that game 1-0 but a goal was scored and yet not counted.
Though liverpool haven't been playing the best football of late and I would probably bet on a draw, if i was betting

playing at anfield is one of uniteds toughest games of the year. its going to be interesting to see ho chelsea bounce back after the midweek game so its a must win for united. form goes out the window when united play at anfield. its always a great game to watch.

think united will edge it though.

Well, I'm a neutral on this one. I think Utd's form is much better, but as already pointed out, form goes out the window in these matches. I'd say Liverpool's midfield are likely to win the battle, unless Utd go with 5 in midfield, which I think they probably will.

I'm gonna go for Liverpool 1-0 United, but it wont be pretty. Does anyone know if its on Sky Sports 1/2, or PremPlus?

To avoid the inevitable furore after the event I have decide to post My Post match comments now. LIverpool claim was never a penno though I have seen them given. I dont agree that the refs decisions favoured United as if the had we would have had a penno . I,m happy that Rooney proved he was not a waste of money by scoring his first goal agains the old enemy. To sum up a good win for united and no Ronaldo didn't dive as there was definite contact.
