What the hell are you talking about - Gerard's arm goes across Sholes chest and Scholes does a Rivaldo and goes down holding his face!
He caught... Scholes... with... his... elbow... in... the... face... Watch the clip again.

It would have been a harsh sending off, but Gerrard definately did look at Scholes before catching him with the elbow. It wasn't like he swung an elbow at Scholes, more like just pushing it back into his face.

Isn't it amazing how fans only see what they want to see. :D I won't comment on the Gerrard incident but its funny how a Liverpool fan and United fan see it a completely different way.

Hate saying it, but Utd deserved to win more than Liverpool.

Liverpool looked very ordinary and couldn't come up with anything dangerous. That said, I can't remember Utd threatening a whole lot in the second half either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 799 ✭✭✭dirkey_wynne

Utd fan. I thought at first it was face but upon seeing the replay I thought perhaps it was more chest. If he had been sent off it would have been a joke. It was a foul I thought though. As for Scholes going down like Rivaldo, look at Riise going down for Brown's second yellow. A defo foul, but he must still be dizzy! Rolled about 10 times!!

I am a Utd fan and Gerrard should not have been sent off. It was not as blatent as Campbell elbowing Solkjaer that time last season or was it two seasons ago?

United deserved the win, Liverpools midfield was awful. Scholes, Keane and Heinze were the best players on the pitch by a long way. I couldnt understand why Rise was taken off, i thought he was Liverpools best player today and causing the only danger, should have taken off Garcia.

Riise went quiet after the Brown challenge. Brown caught him straight in the ankle. Maybe Benitez thought he was injured (wouldn't be the first). Agree with the rest though. United played like a team inspired by their midfield and Liverpool played like a team without inspiration.

I've never seen a United side play so defensivley, but fair play to them. They played to their strenghts. I thought it was a poor game over all - mainly Liverpool's fault for not stepping up to the plate.

Gerrard off for what? Glad to see you still talk out your hole. United deserved to claim the win held on well to the lead given by Jerzys mistake. Liverppol just werent good enough end of story. Morientes played well and showed some good touches, will be nice to see how himself and Milan get on voer the rest of the season.

Without anyone capable of making a simple pass, they wont get on very well at all. Liverpools passing in midfield was shocking Alonso is only there 4 months and already is badly missed.

dot dot dot. A lot of pleyers went missing for large parts of the game **** happens, or lest we judge passing on one game.

I agree. Some of Liverpool's passing especially around the defence and midfield was woeful. They gave the ball away so often.

So again another poor quality game and another Dudek error to seperate the sides. Liverpool really missed Alonso today.

    Match stats

    Mike.

Not sure where those stats came from, these are the full game stats
    Liverpool Team Name Manchester United
    0 Goals 1
    3 Shots on target ( Inc Goals ) 1
9 Shots off Target (inc woodwork) 4
    4 Blocked Shots 0
    9 Corners Won 4
    13 Total Fouls Conceded 28
    1 Offsides 3
    2 Yellow Cards 3
    0 Red Cards 1
    49% Possession 51%

Considering utd were down to 10 men for 25 minutes the possesion stats tell a real story. The game was won in the midfield were Utd just wanted the ball more then Liverpool. Even when they were down to 10 men they were allowed to walk the ball out from the back.

Deserved win for Utd, Liverpool need to improve quickly or face missing out on Champions League football next year, 6 points behind Everton in 4th and Everton have a game in hand and with Spurs and Middlesborough breathing down their throats. Could be a tough end of season for them

handy 3 points awful attacking play yet again from liverpool not that i mind long may it continue :D

Great result for Man U today. Besides the goal Rooney again failed to like up to the "wonder kid" title. I must say though, Keane was yet again outstanding in midfield.

I felt though, after the sending off, the ref gave everything to liverpool. The slightest challange he was giving against Man U. He must have had the draw backed.

Thats the double over liverpool and we are now 10 points ahead of them. Now come on Spurs and Bolton

now honestly i think we can score 2/3 against them and i dont see them scoring at all.

I think its about time you gave up trying to predict scores of games which Man U are playing. In midweek you predicted a full strength chelsea team to score 4 against a not so full strength Man U team, and again today you predicted a 2 or 3 nil win for liverpool.

Stick to what you are good at. S*it stirring

I suggest you watch the clip. He clearly didn't.

Poor game by Liverpool today. Man Utd have one weak shot on goal and Dudek gifts them 3 points again. If I were the manager, I'd make Dudek personally apologise to every member of team in the dressing room and then threaten to axe him if he doesn't improve his concentration.

F*cking seriously annoyed! We are getting a woeful dose of luck this season, what with injuries, refereeing decisions and now this.

Just watched the tape now :)
    Chelsea are winning 1-0 :/
    Useless game again :(

    ---

Gerrard actually clipped Scholes face, I dont think it was intentional, but I'm sure it will be looked at. p.s. to all you guys saying Scholes made a mess of it, have you ever, ever, ever, once in 12 years, since Shcoles dive or fake injury? Think about that

    ---

The problem with both teams today was lacked of a decent passer in defence.
Rio missing, while Brown and Slyvestre were great at defending, Keano had be be very deep to get the movements going.
Liverpool even at full strength, have nobody to build up the inital passing, pushing Gerrard deeper, making him more and more less effective.

    ---

I honastly don't think it was a huge mistake by the goalie.
I felt he probably could have got to it, but the ball swerved a little, it was a very pacy shot.

    ---

M.O.M was of course Keano, who made Gerrard look like a championship player, no small task.
Saha was a close second, once him and Van strike up a partnership it'll be like Yorke and Cole all over again :) I can't wait.
Heinze was great as normal, and Ronaldo was playing quite good again, his final touch still of course lacking, but his teamwork improved 200%.

Carragher was the only player for Liverpool which I felt had a good game.
Baros looked good, not great, got a heavy knock though.
Morienties looked rusty, he's gona be great.
Garcia started well and then was crap.

Liverpool had no game winnings on the bench.

    ---

Rooney, Ronaldo, Fletcher all need to be protected more and not be first team players imo, but thats where United are lacking atm.

Always nice to beat the scousers :)
I just realised that the liverpool fans must hate rooney so much, not only does he play for united, but hes an evertonian!
    The worst of the worst.
p.s. if Rooney had a phone thrown at him, Liverpool should be punished with a close doors home game. That sorta stuff is not on, its dangerous, and it has to be punished, I'm sure it will.

    Thank you :)

Shred, what happened is it hit him in the chest, but his elbow as it was moving back and out it clipped his chin, which pushed up his mouth which hurts.
It was initally in the chest tough, but hit the face

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,147 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

Guy who threw the phone must be kicking himself he missed. Was a stupid thing to do and he will no doubht be banned for life from the stadium. As for closed door game dont be silly I didnt see Arsenal playing games behind closed doors after someone gave Carragher a quid!

it wasnt even a free never mind a card, its a pity keanes shot didnt go in it would have been a better reflection of our superiority over them

I couldn't believe the amount of times Gerrard gave the ball away today and he lost out to challenges to Scholes on occassions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭d22ontour

he is a great player he cant be expected to carry the rest of the midfield every week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

He is a good player, but euro 2004 highlighted he has a bit to go before he becomes the complete midfielder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭d22ontour

you mean up to keane or vieiras standard thats true but he will get there not like the decent but over-rated lampard

The biggest critisism I'd have of Gerrard is that he's not tactically there yet, also he seems to go for extravagant passes on too many occassions and only gets a certain percentage but on the highlights they aren't shown, he has quite a shot on his though and a a great engine.

However, its only one game so lets not get carried away with criticism of Gerard and co..

since when is losing to utd only one game, thats twice this season utd have outclassed them if utd s days are numbered what does that say for liverpool?

its ok they are turning the corner!! :D Hell of a windy road they are on though.

Gerrard was shown up as what he really is today, hes not really top quality.

Do you not feel Gerrard is over rated? He's talked about as world class. He's talked about in the same mould as Keane and Viera. But as I've repeatedly stated, and as was proved today he doesn't do it in the big games.

I actually think Lampard is a better player in that respect. He bosses games against big sides. Keane has never had it that easy against Lampard. And that was at Anfield!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 799 ✭✭✭dirkey_wynne

Excellent. Just as I posted that last msg they started to analyse the game on The Premiership. Giles (best analyst in football in my view) stated "He's a great marauder, but he's not a classic midfielder. For him to be playing central midfield you'd need to have a Keane and an Alonso in there with him. When the game is tight he doesn't do it. He'll do it for you against the Villa's etc, but in the really big games he just doesn't do it. I have yet to see him do it in the really really big games."

Glad I'm not the only one to share the view. They also pointed out Hypia jumping out of the way as Rooney took his shot - hadn't noticed that during the live coverage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Giles just made a really good point on TV, you have to consider how good Gerrard would look if you put him into the united team.
I'll tell ya right now that I'd want him in my team rather than against him

no i wouldnt mind utd getting him but that will never happen, from christmas last season he dragged liverpool to 4th place, i have yet to see lampard boss a game
its hard enough to see him stick his foot in

I honestly don't think Lampard's over rated. Him, Terry and Cech form a great spine for Chelsea to build on and he looked good in what I saw of the match today.

United deserved their win against the 'pool today, thought Scholes and Keane were fantastic.

dont forget fletcher he has to be very under-rated some of his passing can be sloppy but he is still a kid and with a bit of luck will be a major player for utd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭Jivin Turkey

Well deserved win for United, a good sign for them that they didnt really create much but were still in control for almost all the game. Keane and Scholes dominating. Liverpool just didnt nearly do enough. Very disappointing, Garcia was awful (is there an echo in here? ;) ).

As regards Gerrards "sending off", for gods sake, United cant play any off the top teams without some one off the opposition deserving to be sent off, its ridiculous.

And apparently Gerrard isnt world class now? Again, that is totally ridiculous. He wasnt great today, but hey who doesnt have a bad game? He was brilliant against Arsenal this year, and has completely bossed games between both United and Arsenal over the last few years. In general if he plays well against these teams, Liverpool win, if not, they lose. It is hard to consistently play well in the big games when you are the only player in your team at that level.
