Journalism student needs help on Chinese social life

    Hi all,

I'm a journalism student in DCU writing an article on the social lives of Chinese people in Ireland. I hope someone can help me.

When I was in Sydney, Australia, last year I noticed that there
were generally not that many Asians in pubs and nightclubs, despite a very big Asian population there. It seems to be fairly true for Ireland too.

So I want to know where they (Chinese in particular) DO go to socialise, while in Ireland. It would be great if I could talk to some of you about it: in this message board, by email, by phone (I can email you my number) or in person if you are around Dublin.

Do any of you have anything to say about the social scene in Ireland, as opposed to China? How about the emphasis on alcohol in Ireland?

Do Chinese people in Ireland feel lonely or find it hard to settle in to the Irish culture?

Any help would be deeply appreciated. Have a great new year (and upcoming Chinese New Year!) :D
    Thanks!

IMO, Asians are often more shy than Europeans, so I think they try and avoid pubs and clubs. But, this is Ireland, drinking capital of the world, I've seen quite a few Chinese people clubbing and socializing in pubs here in Galway.

I've never found it hard to settle, but then again I was born here. I've never really found it difficult to make friends with people, but that's just my personality.

As you may well see, this board is not frequented, but I do hope more Chinese people reply and help you here.

In my experience, the older generation of Chinese living in Ireland (people such as my parents who would've immigrated to Ireland in the 70/80's) remain within the social circle of the local chinese community.

Typically it'll be their children & younger immigrants who've grown up in Ireland who are more likely to interact and socialise with Irish folks.

I don't mean to detract attention from this board (soz demeant0r :)), but you could also try contacting the webmistress at kaykays.com. She runs a blog for Irish born Chinese and could provide some more insight for you.

Thanks Grand_Izer, I've already done it and it was quite useful! Just trying to broaden my research a little.

    Cheers again :)
