Anyone any experience with Amocom in cork????

They recently added a new node for their wireless access, which means my place might be able to get broadband.

Cant get DSL where I am, so 512/256 wireless for €35 a month sounds good.

Anyone any experience with Amocom and is there anything I should look out for???

Where is the new node? I'm looking at Amocom as a potential replacement for my ISDN connection when my flat rate contract is up in June. I contacted them in the past and they seemed very helpful, offered to come out and do a site test so long as I had a LOS to their transmitter at Cork airport - which I do, though I'm pretty sure I'm out of range (unless they've got some beefy equipment!).

No idea of service levels but like you I'd be interested to know.

The new one is the one on Spike/Ringaskiddy.

I'm about a half mile outside the boundary of that node, but I know a neighbour who is also outside has the service, so I've filled in the form and am waiting for them to come out for a test :D

Hmmm.....just checked out their site and I'm interested. I'm living near Cobh and haven't been able to get broadband. (Big new housing estate with DSL unsuitable lines? - bloody Eircom). No joy with Digiweb either. Area looks well covered by Amocom now though! Only thing is that the 'Starter' option (€35/mth plus VAT) requires payment SIX MONTHS in advance for the first year (on top of installation charge)! Does this seem excessive to anyone?

Got it installed yesterday, not looking back at diallup anymore :D

Apparently the website is a bit out of date, they cover a bit more now. :)

Service is good sofar. 512 down 256 up for the starter pack, just what I needed :D

6 months is a bit much, but what the hell.

Padraig try it ;) If youre in the new rushbrooke links place, that should all be covered, I think. Its worth a try anyway.

any of the wireless crowds got new nodes that cover bishopstown at the moment? none covered me last time i called around (around october).

A friend of mine living near the airport has been using them for about a year and says they are very reliable with good tech support.

Is there someone technical on this forum who can explain how far (how many miles) wireless can reach if there are no physical obstacles? For many years I have been unable to understand why those of us with a South Cork sea view are also those who have no mobile signal and now no wireless broadband when there are two f-ing great gas rigs 7 miles out that could splatter the whole south coast with coverage? I mean, it's not exactly rocket science that the land goes downhill close to the sea... so if you want to cover the coast you need to do it from the sea?

I can't afford satellite (who can?) and although I've had ISDN for 10 years, basically it doesn't work very well except for point to point communication (transferring graphics to printers) at which it is brilliant.

    Thanks for any advice

    Dear Eircom mole,

Our exchange in tiny, sunny Minane Bridge (021 4887***) is an Ericsson AXE remote off the Carrigaline exchange installed in 1993. Is there any hope this could ever be technically upgraded for DSL? I know there is the cost problem and that many people in the area will be out of distance range from the exchange because it's rural, but before starting campaigning I would like to know if it's actually possible...

After all, my ISDN shouldn't work (I am about 4 miles from the exchange as the wire travels) but it does...

Thanks for any info you have.

5.7GHz should work up to 30km's with the right equipment and under the right circumstances. Not sure if 3.5Ghz allows even higher output. The problem with your suggestion is that the transmitter should ideally be high up and sea level is obviously by definition about as low as it gets. The reason for this is the freznel zone. You can probably look up a much better definition of the Freznel zone than I can put together, but in essence you need ground clearance between the two points to avoid signal distortion so visual line-of-sight isn't enough. And I think the further away you are the more ground clearance you need.

I think both of those rigs are quite high because of the flare towers (which presumably might interfere with transmission?). I'll try and find out how high from my friendly neighbourhood retired helicopter pilot who used to work on the supply flights.

Thanks for the information about Fresnel zones.

Amocom looks very interesting, they've got a coverage map here and surprisingly I seem to lie in its catchment area! The only problem is that I'm on contract to IOLBB at the minute. Still, the contract will expire eventually and the prospect of telling Eircom where to shove their line is delicious ;)

Hey Chris, did you find out if this service is capped? What kind of speeds and pings are you getting? Have you got any intention of ditching your Eircom line and using VOIP? I don't suppose they've got a free installation option for students like Irish Broadband too?

Just a warning about Amocom's routing, it isn't exceptional. Unless it's been fixing in the last short while you won't enjoy gaming. Although saying that, it's great for downloading. Guess that's the tradeoff you have to suffer for living in a non-dsl enabled area.

If you are near the City centre then IBB wireless is a cheaper, and higher spec option (never used myself but looks better on paper)

Im actually living in Ringaskiddy and when I was talking to the lads they were saying the two repeaters one in Rushbrook, and the other over by Novaritis.
I got it xmas eve 512 up and down, and i must admit its the biz, but its probably a good idea to get your own router, the canopy is a bit a limited in that respect apart from that, im happily downloading the internet, and am about to cut the landline Screw you Eircon!

Heh. Forgot about this thread ;)

Average ping to game servers (for Serious Sam 2, anyway) is from 90-200. Good improvement over 56k modem ;)

Download cap - they said to me they dont have a fixed cap, but if someone is "hogging" bandwidth, they'll send you an email asking why.

Only had for about a week, pulled 4 gigs in that time and no probs so far.

The one problem is that it seems to go off for about an hour a day due to tidal fluctuations. They're looking into it.

Other than that, I'm delighted with it and would recommend it to anyone. And their website is out of date. Some of the nodes are bigger according to the installer.
